Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Like the title asks. Is it possible to build a wheel so that there is a fixed on one side and a IGH on the other?

SRAM Torpedo Singlespeed is the first ever single speed hub, that you can ride free or fixed!Seven rotations with a screwdriver will switch SRAM Torpedo.
That is the closest hub I can think of.

Better to just have two wheels.

I think you could do something like this with a road bike with vertical dropouts, 130 rear spacing, and a derailleur hanger

Screw on a 5 speed freewheel on the freewheel side of a flip flop hub and a fixed cog on the other.
When riding fixed the derailleur works as a chain tensioner.

However, using a rear derailer as a chain tensioner will not work riding fixed.

Would not work. The second you put backpressure on the drivetrain, the derailleur would break.

Get any three speed hub that will take a disk brake. SRAM, and Shimano have versions, maybe Sturmey Archer? Or go for the gusto and do a Shimano Alfine 11sp. Then get one of those cogs that will bolt up to standard disk brake mounts... Make some kind of velcro thing to keep your cable along the chainstay when you flip the wheel or something...?

2 bikes is the correct answer.

I've never tried it so I wouldn't know, just theorizing. At any rate, I don't put any back pressure on the drive train since I use front and rear brakes
I have an idle 120mm flip flop hub that I'm going to put a 5 speed freewheel on, redish the wheel, and put in my fixie.
I'll use a chain tug with a built in derailleur hanger and run a full length cable housing from the friction thumb shifter to the derailleur.
I asked a long time bike shop owner about it and he felt it could be done.

The hub I'm using has cartridge bearings. The benefit is that it has no cones which restrict how far to the left I could move the hub to make room for the 5 speed freewheel.

You more than likely put backpressure on your drivetrain. Even the slightest backpressure (like while slowing down) will cause the bottom side of the drivetrain to try to go into a line:

I have no idea what you're talking about, but you have over 9000 posts so I'm just going to agree.
