Red Bull Mini 'Drome (world's smallest velodrome)
The world's smallest velodrome finally paid a visit to the US. From what I understand they will be visiting other states as well. I went to the first visit in Orlando FL this past Thursday
This thing is really cool, and the event was FREE!
There were definitely some gnarly crashes, people flying off the edge, crashing face first into the boards, etc...but no one was severely injured and everyone had a blast!
The rules are really relaxed; siglespeed? ok! conversions? ok! brakes? ok! riser bars? ok!
The riders that did best had a BMX style setup; wide tires, wide riser bars, and singlespeed (freewheel). There were around 90 registered riders, and the first go around was a qualifying round, timed. The fastest 34 riders were then pinned against each other in a one on one pursuit, and so-on until one survived. I believe the winner has an extensive BMX background.
Getting started is REALLY tough, and a few riders were not able to get going, but they had heart and didn't give up. Everyone was very supportive, and the riders were treated to free water, Red Bull (of course) and had a lounge with the best view of the track. There were Gooooldsprints on the sidelines
Maybe this thread could follow the velodrome as they travel around the states? Folks could update when their area gets a visit? If not, oh well, here's some pics to enjoy I would have taken more photos, but there was too much fun to be had. Hopefully some others that went frequent this forum and can contribute...

I was there, definitely pretty interesting to watch. It took forever for people to learn how to ride and most had way to big of a gear for such a small track. Nice pictures man, I wasn't able to get anything good, the first pic in the second set is actually a buddy of mine who goes to UCF.

Looks like fun but the possibility of going off the higher sides of the track and flipping as a result (I've seen the videos) is quite unnerving and definitely limiting.

As an incredibly ignorant 10 year old I remember heading over to the Brian Piccolo velodrome with my gary fisher wanting to ride. Hopes crushed of course, but if they started setting these up it would be a great "in" for people interested in the sport.
I had no idea this was even in town, but last week was a scheduling mess anyway so I'm somewhat relieved I didn't know. Where was the venue btw?

Professor Buzzkill here. This is a fun ride, not a velodrome. Ride it for fun. But, don't expect more than that.
This is like shooting baskets at Dave & Busters and counting that as "Playing Basketball".
This is more like a BMX Park obstacle than a velodrome...which is why BMX type bikes did better. A straight up BMX street bike with shorter cranks would be unstoppable.
