Thinking about Getting a crankset

Hey, im new here i would like some help looking for a crankset that is compatible with the Dawes MTA. Yes i understand its cheap, but i still love it to death. So yeah the dawes comes with 3 piece cranks,a Euro Cartridge BB and i would like to switch over to the more common cranksets you see on fixed gears/single speeds. What would i have to look for in order to know that it will work?

Any help is appreciated

striknein 08-27-11 05:53 PM

Those are the more common cranks. Why do you want to change them?

Phyx 08-27-11 06:08 PM

ohh well i guess i wasn't very clear i'm sorry. but the bike comes with bmx style cranks. i want to switch off to this type. http://www.businesscycles.com/graphics/tcr-sram.jpg

Cranksets are overrated. Balance bikes FTW.

what kind of arrospokz are those?

Germanicus 08-27-11 09:16 PM

S300 Courier's are kind of like budget Omniums if you want to keep it in the Sramily..

Phyx 08-27-11 09:56 PM

So I can use w/e crankset?

max5480 08-28-11 12:25 AM

Sram S300 Couriers come with a GXP bottom bracket, the same one that comes with Omniums.

striknein 08-28-11 12:54 AM

I need to see photos of the bottom bracket before I can make a recommendation. BMX bottom brackets come in all shapes and sizes. What's commonly known as "English" doesn't commonly go on BMX bikes.

Post a pic of your current crankset.

Ignore

ok ill post it tommorrow. for now just look at this http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BICYCLE-...ht_9151wt_1091. there are pictures of it.

EDIT-By english i mean euro cartridge. made a Mistake.

striknein 08-28-11 01:45 AM

That's not a BMX crank. It's just a really cheap 3-piece road crank. The bottom bracket is of a standard, "English" square-taper style. If you want to keep it cheap, remove the existing crank and bottom bracket and measure the spindle. Then find a crankset that requires the same spindle length. If you don't mind spending another 30 bucks, you can replace both the crank and bottom bracket. I'd recommend the latter since you'll be replacing that loose ball BB with a maintenance-free cartridge style, and you'll have a lot more options when choosing a crankset.

Phyx 08-28-11 01:51 AM

Great! But it says it comes with a euro cartridge BB. so is this the type of Bottom Bracket you are talking about? Or is it what you described a loose ball bearing one.

striknein 08-28-11 01:55 AM

I can't say for certain that it is a loose ball BB, but in one of the photos there's clearly a BB lock ring on the non-drive side, which would indicate that it's of a much older style. I'd need a closer look at it to be sure.

Phyx 08-28-11 01:58 AM

So what type of bottom bracket would i get? I understand a cartridge English one, but specifically A model of bottom bracket. Would i just get one made for a english bb and with a square taper?

rustybrown 08-28-11 02:33 AM

Bb30

Phyx 08-28-11 02:46 AM

can i not get this http://www.performancebike.com/bikes..._20000__400184 and Attach a crankset of my choice depending on the spindle size i choose?

rustybrown 08-28-11 02:50 AM

No. Cranksets are propriety items. They take one size. So choose whatever cranks you wants, then get the spindle.

Scrodzilla 08-28-11 06:49 AM

Way to confuse the kid, guys. The Dawes MTA takes a standard English-threaded BB.

Rust'y right though - unless you're buying a SRAM crankset with included GXP BB, you'll need to pick your cranks then buy BB with a the corresponding spindle length.

striknein 08-28-11 11:05 AM

Shimano UN-54 is a good, cheap bottom bracket.

rustybrown 08-28-11 11:25 AM

boo plastic cups.
