Which is the main issue with the Kilo. If you are a good mechanic with a nice tool set I would say get a kilo. But if not I would say go to shops and find a bike there you like, and ask them about the bikes. |
I'm trying to wrap my mind around a fixed gear bike with a freewheel...

If the streets suck where you live, I just found out the hard way that the wheelset on my globe is SUPER STRONG. I should have a taco'd front wheel right now but she's as straight and true as ever.

What are your guys' thoughts on SE Bikes?

Meh. Too expensive.

I love the PK Ripper SS they have. Especially the few special editions that were made. Takes me back to the BMX days...but I agree...sticker price is a little high

PK Rippers go for 500 on BD.. but they are :/

Been a couple weeks but I'll put a vote in for the Bianchi Pista. It's a well made, classic butted steel track bike of moderate weight with good components. First rode one as a rental at Major Taylor Velodrome. Comes fixed gear with 16T cog on the rear hub. Combined with a 48T chainring the gearing is set up more for track workout, a bit high for most street use, especially if there are hills, as 48x16 is 81 gear inches. Rear hub is a flip-flop threaded for a freewheel on the other side. You'd need to add a freewheel cog and flop the rear wheel. An 18T freewheel would gear it down some to 72 inches without having to break the chain and remove links. Freewheel isn't very expensive (should be ~$25). Note: chain is 3/32 inch. If you need to gear down further I recommend changing chainring too (130mm spider). A little more than a Kilo TT, you should be able to find one around $500-525 USD.
