freewheel question ...
 

I have been looking at some free wheels for my single speed. I seen some shimano made ones that can be used on bmx or single speed for about $30.
I also seen some made by a company called white and they were about $90...

my question is ....is it better to get a more expensive freewheel and is it going to make a big difference or will the less expensive ones be fine.

any help would be great.

If you are riding in really bad conditions (e.g. heavily salted roads in winter) I would get the White Industries freewheel. I destroyed a Shimano freewheel in two winters. But if you are not abusing it, Shimano will be fine.

the white bros has more engagement pawls which helps for SS mtb'ing for less engagement lag when creeping through rough or tight obstacles ... it's sorta useless on the street ... get dicta, shimano or ACS. Save ur $

Dicta is sold under a lot of house brands (Sunlite, Diamondback, etc.) and you can find some of these stupid cheap. I'd go for one of those first, and then if you feel you need it, switch to an ENO when you know what gearing you want.

This is half true, they do have a version that has more engagement pawls for offroad but they do make a road version too. So the road version is not useless on the street. Just wanted to let you kow so you can make an educated decision. Personally I have the road version on my Pinarello and love it.

The regular version of the White has more points of engagement than the average Dicta/Shimano/etc.... I've got one. What you're calling an off road version, is meant for trials (not trails) riding, and by all accounts, has a lot of drag. Six pawls will do that. The regular version has three pawls, and similar POE to a four pawl ACS. The difference being, the ACS engages two pawls at a time, while the White engages all three every time. The White trials freewheel engages three of its six pawls at a time, to double its POE.

Most conventional freewheels only have two pawls.

Quality bearings trump replacing a bird every season.

White's are nice, but beyond my budget, Origin 8 used to make a FW for about $45 that was almost as good as the White. I have ridden all the -$30 freewheels the best by far is Excess, though the ACS Crossfire isn't bad, Shimano's just feel like junk, Dicta and ACS claws are junk. Suntours are nice but good luck finding one
