having ridden both i enjoyed both. The aluminum was a little harsh to me though. It really depends on what you want to do with the bike. I wasn't aware that there was aluminum that was THAT much better as someone had said in an earlier post, but do know that lighter steel can be much nicer. Aluminum is nice for rain too, as well as a little more responsive in general. Overall I prefer steel for the comfort of the ride and you can still race even on a track with a steel bike, believe it or not.

Really? I kinda believe in steel to be honest. Not that it's a be-all-end-all, but it has its niche.

How can steel be real? It isn't even on the periodic table! I like my bikes to be made out of pure elements, thanks very much.
...I'm sure someone will come along and try to give me a science lesson, to which I say whoosh |
Steel is cool. It's not heavier, it's smoother, you can weld it, and it looks better.

I want a bike made of pure oxygen, it's supah light guy with all NJS parts and the option to mount a rear d so I can put some geeyahs on it for da hills and stuff

I have an aluminum, steel and CF bike. Honestly my favorite is my steel frame (853), love riding that bike. I always feel compelled to tell my wife how much I love it every time I ride it, she thinks I'm crazy.

whatever ... TRACK RACing bikes at least bikes made after the year 2000 are almost always Al or Carbon .... "steel" frames generally, in regard to cheap entry level "fixies", can be produced by nearly untrained laborers in Asia compared to high end carbon and Al fabrication. Needless to say YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ... the Steel is real thing is a bit dated and tongue and cheek at this point if you ask me, it's just a handy thing for people to say so they can sound cool. There are plent of pro & cons for all materials mentioned here.
You know there are cheap Carbon and Aluminum frames! Made in China, even Colnago had some carbon frames made in Taiwan or China, somewhere over there! Steel is Real (affordable) for me! Cause I cant afford decent Alum or Carbon frames yet! |
