Is it possible to get this bike under 20 lbs?

Hi,
I just bought a MASI speciale uno (2011) for $500.00 . I really liked the look, but loved the test ride. My question is would it be possible to get the bike under 20lb? and could it be done for $400.00 - $500.00 ? My commute to school is pretty much all up hill and Austin has a lot of climbs downtown. This is my first bike so I am still getting used to some of the bike language. I was told the wheel set was a good place to start, maybe the fork? Any help would be awesome.

You can replace the wheels, but maybe hold off and save your money. You may do better by switching to an easier gear, making sure the hubs are adjusted correctly, and ultimately loosing weight yourself.

Remove the brakes,Carbon fork,200 gram tires,carbon seat post,lighter saddle,lighter bars/stem. That should be around 400 bucks and 18 pounds.

Squirrelli 09-30-11 11:07 PM

That's most likely more than $400.

TejanoTrackie 09-30-11 11:16 PM

Personally, if I had only one bike in Austin, I'd get one with gears.

adriano 09-30-11 11:21 PM

obviously yes. is it worth it? obviously no.

A carbon fork and lower profile Kinlins to road + low profile track hub with double butted spokes will probably be my plan of action, and that can all be done for less than $500 easy.

adriano 09-30-11 11:54 PM

kinlin wheelset plus carbon fork would be the smartest bet and still 250 at best and still not very necessary.

+1. If you live in a hilly area 2 or even 3 pounds won't do **** compared to a geared bike. Craigslist time.

Thanks, I will try all of those things except loosing weight. I am 5'6 and 140 pounds and less and I wont be able to play soccer without getting thrown off the ball.

ianwbz 10-01-11 10:01 AM

Looking back on it I think a geared bike would have been a better choice, but I still really like this bike. I am going to change out the wheel set and get a carbon fork next.

Just ride your bike man. I don't know how bad Austin is, but are you really going to notice 2 lbs? You'll definitely notice the $500 you're going to spend to lose them.

ianwbz 10-01-11 10:37 AM

Good point, probably won't notice until I'm going uphill with my backpack. I just got the bike so once I ride it more I'll have a better idea of whether or not the 3 lbs will matter. Thanks a lot for the input

Can anyone link me to a good example of a light weight wheel set?

fixed.

You really would've been better off spending $900-$1000 on a bike initially than sticking 4-500 on a 500 bike. Your money would've gone a lot further that way.

max5480 10-01-11 01:29 PM

^^ that being said, don't waste any more on the Masi

JohnDThompson 10-01-11 04:07 PM

What will you gain by getting it under 20 pounds?

mucho el streeto credo.

EpicSchwinn 10-01-11 05:54 PM

How much (ball park estimate) weight would be saved by going from a steel fork to a carbon fork? My bike currently sits at 21 lbs and I'm lacking street cred.

TejanoTrackie 10-01-11 06:19 PM

Depends on the fork. The i806tr full carbon fork on my Leader is 1.5 lbs lighter than the steel fork on my Kilo WT, which is very heavy. My guess is that on average you could save about a pound.

Scrodzilla 10-01-11 06:49 PM

Which may or not be worth 300 bucks.
