Dawes SST Steel

It's been a little while since I checked on the BD site, but I just did and seen the Dawes SST Steel for the first time there for $249. I know the SST AL was a pretty well liked bike, but anyone ride the SST Steel yet? The description just reads 100% Chromoly but doesn't specify what kind. Anyone?

Leukybear 10-08-11 12:17 AM

Generic.

Anyhow there's not much difference in chromoly tubing as far as any average bikesdirect customer should be concerned of or will even feel the difference between. And for $250 for a complete bike, you should be happy that it's not heavy and easily oxydated hi tensile steel.

Very true - gonna make the jump...

It's basically the same frame as an SE Lager, a Fuji Track, etc.

Except totally different:

Huh. Well it used to be the same.

homebrewk 10-08-11 12:41 PM

ha!

seau grateau 10-08-11 12:47 PM

Why did they redesign it? Old version was a lot nicer, imo.

homebrewk 10-08-11 12:49 PM

I agree.

It was most likely a $$$ issue.

Cost savings...

homebrewk 10-08-11 12:52 PM

Exactly.

Scrodzilla 10-08-11 12:59 PM

Yeah, that new one sucks. Great job, BD.

seau grateau 10-08-11 01:05 PM

Boooooooo!!!

hairnet 10-08-11 01:37 PM

Is Mike going to chime in? It was always kinda creepy when he would to pop up in BD threads

Scrodzilla 10-08-11 01:42 PM

If he does:

Hey Mike, if you were looking to turn the suck up to 11 on that new SST, you done did it.

bfloyd6969 10-08-11 01:55 PM

what do you all not like about the newer version, the comp style? The geometry more relaxed?

Scrodzilla 10-08-11 02:06 PM

It's cheap (as in crappy). That crankset, saddle and seatpost would be right at home on a Walfart bike. At least the older version came with real components and a semi-decent wheelset.

No way that bike should cost $250.

bfloyd6969 10-08-11 03:05 PM

^^ Gotcha. So, for the extra $50, the others such as the Timline, Clockwork, and Messenger are much better deals?

Scrodzilla 10-08-11 03:10 PM

Jou got it, mang.

pateshu 10-09-11 09:44 PM

I have the SST AL and I love it.

Great entry level bike.

i kind of want a timeline on 42s

ssts make my stomach turn, i just hate em. even the name.

raleighdavp 10-10-11 09:16 PM

Has anyone actually ridden it besides offer what they think it could be?

Scrodzilla 10-11-11 06:16 AM

What we think it could be is exactly why no one has ridden it.

adriano 10-11-11 07:15 AM

the sst steel was redundant anyway. bringing in a new product is a very, very small win id say.
