fixed gear wheelset
Building my first fixed gear bike. I've been looking for a wheel-set or just a back wheel. I saw harris cyclery had a 27 back wheel for $80. Or I was look at these, but for that price I'm sure they're trash. Any suggestions?

If it's your first fixed gear bike, they don't need to be uber-nice. Make a bike with cheap enough components that you can toss around, then upgrade later on.
that's just my personal take on things. |

that's just my personal take on things. In my case, I started out with a Schwinn Cutter single speed bike that my wife bought me for Christmas. I rode it two years as a SS; when I started breaking spokes I tried my first attempt at wheelbuilding using a fixed-free hub and a cyclocross rim (to handle the nasty city streets with minimal damage). I had previously done a couple of wheel truings where I took the spokes all the way slack, then tightened them back up, so that part was easy. It was my first time lacing, though. I followed the Gerd Schraner method which turned out to be frightfully easy to me, then tensioned up the wheel and.... so far, so good. |
I'm liking those amelias but people say the hub will strip out....
|
They shouldn't if you are sure to make the cog and lockright nice and tight
|
Yeah, I'm just leery of spending the money to have it strip and have to buy another hub. After pricing all the separate components this is a good deal though.

get one at your local bike collective.

The whole cheap hub, cog, lockring stripping is a myth. Put it on tight and ride.

I''m gonna go ahead and order an Amelia set.
