I have a Roberts road bike, with nice long horizontal dropouts. It has a double and 9 speed Campag gears at the moment, but I wanted to convert it to SS. However I didn't want to unlace the back wheel and lace up my Surly (that's going on my new Inbred anyway), so I thought I'd just put spacers on the cassette hub for now. But then I thought, 'I have two gears at the front, and two at the back would be no trouble. Why not find two gears that use the same chain length, around 50-60 inches and 70-80 inches, and have myself a flip-free flip-flop?' I haven't done the greasy bit yet, but I'm going with either 39x19 or 39x21 and 42x15.
Then I remembered that Rivendell make a bike exactly like this (I forget the name of it). Has anyone else bodged something similar, or splashed out on a Riv? What's the ride like, better than proper SS? Do you never change gear, or are you always stopping and fiddling? |
2 speed? 2 Speed? Read the forum title. Go back to Gearsville

I have not tried that, but Sheldon has written on the subject.

I have a 2 speed fixed gear. I get greasy when I change speeds.

SERIOUSLY, though. http://www.thebikesmith.com/special.htm scroll to the bottom. this place closed down earlier this year. i'm not sure how they modified the coaster hub to be truly fixed, too. anyone else know? |
http://www.63xc.com/lewisc/diy2fg.htm Check this out. I'm looking for a hub as we speak.

I have one of those hubs used in the 63xc article but I haven't had time to convert it yet, though I have taken it apart and put it back together.
Also, the weight is ... substantial. Ain't no aluminum on that puppy. |
