new frame
 

all going well with the post and my bank account this will be my new project.
it is made with bonded reynolds 753 tubing. from the little research i've done on this material it sounds a bit fragile. have any of you run frames with these tubes? if so how practical/tough were they?

correct! It also looks like the seatstays have a bolt passing thru them where they meet the seat tube.

I was bidding on that frame. I reckon you got a good deal there, but I notice that the track stuff is going fairly cheap at the moment, presumably christmas/cold weather putting people off buying. Just hoping that someone puts up a 70s/80s Merckx/Colnago or similar track frame now and I can get a bargain...

aha! i dunno why but i decided i had to have it and got really wound up about the auction. it didn't help that i went to a recording of nevermind the buzzcocks that night and so couldn't keep my eye on it, lets just say i didn't feel much like laughing...

its a bit wierd putting a cyber face to an ebay name, i almost feel guilty, as though maybe you would have done something better with it than me.

I doubt I would have made any better use of is than you. I was only interested in it if it went cheap, which it did!, but I held off going too high as I'm still waiting for something a bit older.

I believe the technical term is binder bolt. If you look real closely at your bike, you may find something similar. Look out! ;)

the pictures on the auction page... something about them makes me think the bike was in a crash. it looks like the top tube meets the head tube weird or something. i dunno. anyone else get that feeling?

tho I appreciate your witty retort, you'll notice that the seat stays don't appear attached to anything... they are held in place solely by the bolt which passes thru them... and also, if you're referring to the seat binder bolt, that's clearly above the seat stays, not interfacing with them at all.

Indeed. Or at least sort of. I see the seat binder bolt up top, but I guess I don't see the bolt you allege is passing through the cluster. It just seems like a fastback cluster to me.

No worries:) It's like a fastback cluster... but where the seatstays attach they appear to be secured by a pin that passes thru them as well as an eyelet on the seat tube lug. That's just something I haven't seen before.

yep, there was a nice white geoffrey butler track (55cm) that went for 77 quid as well!
It seems the ones that aren't drilled for brakes go cheaper.

sorry to drag up an old thread but i didn't think this warranted a new thread. i am going to post vomitron style about the progress of the build as my friends now leave the room if there is even a hint of me talking about bikes.

today the bike shop called to say my wheels are ready to collect, they are record pista hubs (low flange) laced on mavic openpros with dt double butted spokes and i am so exited that i don't know if i can hold out the 20 minutes till my lunch break to go get them...

Reynolds 753 tubing is very good quality. They used to be one of the top tubesets the market when steel was king.

Those chainstays on the blue bike are pretty cool looking. A lot of companies used to do S-Bend chainstays. WIth them there's no need for the builder to crimp the drive-side chainstay for chainring clearance.

now i'm worried about the wheels, just dragged up some info on campy hubs 'exploding' through street use, it only seems to be the large flange versions though, but i'm still a little worried as there is a lot of money in those wheels. i guess i'll just have to wait and see....

afaik there is only ONE documented case of the campy hubs exploding (the one on sheldonbrown)

Yea, it's only the hi-flanged ones. I think it's only the ones with 'sherrif star' cutouts. The cutouts are so big that the flanges aren't quite as strong (only a guess...). But that's what makes them look soooo good!
Sounds like some nice wheels you got, who's building them?
