Hey im having trouble taking off my crank . I loosened and took off my bolts already and it still doesn't come off it has a square taper cup and cone bb. Do need anything else or is it just stubborn ?

You need a crank puller.

DO NOT DO THIS.

At best nothing would happen. At worst you'll ruin your cranks.

You need a crank puller to remove the crank arms, and you need a torque wrench to reinstall. Torque wrench is only optional after you've installed ~50 cranksets.

nah mang, just ride it without the bolts. They'll fall off eventually

I got a bike with a stripped crankarm once and did this. It was practically welded on there (early 80s bike) It took about a month of riding before that sucker loosened up. Even making sure I did a bunch of unnecessary bunnyhops and stoplight sprints.

^ so much win.

I had to give that advice to some guy at the co-op after he stripped his crank threads. He also had to ride back home brakeless - womp womp - but he was one of those guys that scoffs at the idea of brakes on fixed gears

The come off nice with marred tapers, replacing marred cranks is much easier/cheaper than buying a $12 tool!

I was 1/2 serious

A car's gear puller works really well too.

I tried my gear puller on that old bike I had but the jaws wouldn't fit in between crank arm and BB :(

I have read about that and considered bringing up the topic at the co-op member meeting. It seems like a good idea since plenty of people try to pull their cranks without asking for guidance and end up with trouble.

Any idea what size is needed for cranks?
