Gear Ratio

Currently riding a 42/16 but was thinking of going up to a 46 or 48 so I can ride faster on my long, flat commute. Pretty new to fixed gear so I also want to start learning skids. Are there any kind of general guidelines for what gear ratio works best?

If you want to learn to skid you should avoid 48/16 because you will only have one skid patch. You should probably learn to skid with the gear ratio you have since that will be easier.

Cogs are a lot cheaper than chainrings.

+1

46/16 gives you quite a few skid patches and is, IMHO, a pretty good all-around gearing.

Never mind that nonsense. Which gear ratio will look better?

You use 42/15? I've been hearing to avoid a smaller cog.

Let me fix that. 47/14. If your bike can take bigger. Chainrings get 53/16.
