Only real downside is that the lugs can wear down rather quickly. Luckily we have Shoe Goo for this.

maybe a problem with the kursk's low heel? Maybe the midway pro doesn't have this problem?

The turn this thread has taken has convinced me to try SPD. Maybe the purity of SL isnt worth it...

That's a really personal sort of thing. However, keep in mind that if you went mtb it'd be an expensive experiment. In order to experience the full benefit of mtb you'd need the right shoes as well.

All real fixed riders ride without brakes, duh.

Clipless or not.

I have a pair and the only time I ever clack is going down metal stairs and occasionally I'll step on a small pebble or something and it'll clack, but definitely not enough to be a dealbreaker.

I don't ride brakeless regularly but have done a fair amount of brakeless riding and still do on occasion. I feel much safer riding brakeless with clipless than without.

some clipless pedals will eject on you if they are worn enough or if you pull on them really hard.

shimano SPD and bebop are more prone than the other designs, however.

There are two types of shimano spd cleats. One is designed to pull out, the other is not. Many of the lower end SPD pedals come with the type that release in multiple directions and can pull out. I imagine its intended as a safety feature for noobs, but definately not safe for brakeless fixie riding. The type that will not pull out can be IDed by a number stamped into the cleat (SM-SH51). The kid they wil release in multile directipns are SM-SH56.

Personally w/ front brake only...double clip n straps.... I find that in congested Los Angeles with the a$$h0les that I share the road with riding brakeless is very dangerous and a risk I'm not going to take. You could be the best rider in the world, but it's not going to help when some stupid idiot doesn't see you (or doesn't give a crap) that you're there and cut you off... will you have enough time to pull off a skid stop in time with room?

Real fixed riders ride brakeless with street shoes and eggbeaters.
