Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? "Oil!" means something like "Watch out for the car!" You get a second wind about 70miles into a century as well.

I swear that on long (for me) road rides I can feel when my body switches over from burning carbs to burning fat for energy. Maybe is psychological.

You sort of get this rush of energy (adrenaline?) that comes over you. It's a nice feeling. I feel it when I'm riding sometimes. I especially notice it when I'm riding my indoor trainer. Probably because it's such a controlled environment.
I think the "second wind'' is when your body starts to metabolize fat after you have run out of food energy and worked through you bonk. You're experiencing runners' high.

eh. maybe it is just feeling better after some time and getting in rhythm

This happens on long climbs, too. At the beginning you're breathing hard, legs are burning and you struggle to find a good cadence. At some point though, you find the cadence, your legs get used to the grade and your breathing evens out and becomes slower, less labored. That's when you can really start to dish out the hurt. It's a fantastic feeling to really settle into a climb.

a bike puter with cadence function can help u develop a good cadence between 90-110 is a god spin for any speed.

I like snacking on a Clif Bar a few bites at a time (while riding) on long rides. Peanut butter + anything sandwiches are great for lunch food, if you want something simple and full of carbs.

I'm a fig newton junkie. If I know I'll be out for over 4 hours I like to stop for a proper cheeseburger if possible

+1 I can always spot a real roadie when I see a banana poking out of his/her jersey pocket.

I didn't mean literally. I meant more of a comfortable cadence for that particular hill/grade/effort etc. Even with a computer your cadence varies but at some point your legs find the right one and everything else (breathing, position, etc) just clicks.

+1 to bananas

I like taking potato wedges and PB&J sandwiches. I dont know how people do long rides and survive off energy goop packets and electrolyte tabs.

M&Ms trail mix is good for lifting my spirit

Not just bike food, but one of the best foods ever.

Cheap, packed with nutrients, it's an excellent recovery food, filling and tastes good when ripe. Unfortunately, some trade issues with other countries is the only downer.

I also like coconut water for recovery. I live close to a grocery store that sells young green coconuts for $1.50 so I'm lucky. They used to be a dollar so that was an insane deal.

Yeah, love bananas for recovery. Also good for measuring exposure to radiation. I also like plain balkan style yogurt for recovery. Tons of protein.
