Belt Drive
Hey, so I saw at Mountain Equipment Co-Op (a store in Canada) that they sell a single speed road bike equipped with a belt drive!
Where would I buy the belt chain wheel, belt free wheel / cog, and the belt?? I would like to convert my bianchi SS to belt drive Thanks!!! |
You have to cut a gap somewhere in your rear triangle to do that, you know.

Hmm, really? Why is that? The belt I saw was about the same width as a track bike chain.... ?

The reason you have to separate the rear triangle is the belt is one continuous loop. You can't break the belt to slip it around the chainstay, therefore the frame has to separate for the belt to go through. It is possible to convert a frame for belt use, but it isn't for the faint of heart. You could easily do it wrong and ruin an otherwise perfect frame. The best option, unless you are very mechanically inclined, is to either buy a belt specific frameset/bike, or have an lbs or framebuilder do the conversion.

Because a chain can be disconnected to go through the rear triangle via the master link or removing a link. A belt does not have a break in it, and thus, there must be a spot somewhere in the rear triangle for the belt to get in.
There are a lot of different ways this is done, I'm not sure of any DIY options though. http://www.sandsmachine.com/p_geekh_003.jpg http://cdn0.media.cyclingnews.future...ropout_600.jpg |

Ok... I think I will put that mod on the back burner then... Thanks! |
