converting mid-90's Aluminum Cannondale Road bike to Fixed gear / or / SS

I built mine up about 7-years ago and I pretty much used all bargin bin components (Tektro brakes, cheap schraeder-valve Sun rims, alivio front hub etc.) Once you get your chain figured out, I say just build it up and have fun with it. I know I love mine.
Yea, I really do like the frame geometry! I'm going to do some experimenting... If I can get the chain tension good with minimal work I will make it a SS for now, if it's too much hassle I will get it going again as a road bike... I was able to get some shimano 600 brake levers and calipers today for pretty cheap and I can probably get the derailleur going with a little elbow grease... Only thing left would be some used bar end shifters or down tube shifters... The wheels have shimano 600 hubs, 8 speed cassette, shimano 600 crank, and a shimano 600 cartridge headset so it would be fairly easy to make it a full 600 road bike... Come to think about it that would make a sweet little ride! Hmmm... I've got some work to do... But first step is to stop buying bikes! I'm buying two more tomorrow.. Way too many projects on the go over here =)

i'm sort of in a similar position as the OP. i have a 1997 giant kronos road bike with vertical dropouts that i would like to convert to a fixed/SS with an ENO eccentric hub. i think the rims are original. is it feasible to have the rear wheel rebuilt with new spokes and the new hub? they were true the last time had a shop look at them. should i just get new rims for the front and rear?

also, what are some good sources for parts like colored chains, sprockets, and cranks? i have been looking half-heartedly and not finding much.

thanks!

in before mihlbach - is your rear rim offset? if so you should just get a new rear wheel built with a ENO hub. your front wheel should be fine.

oh, good question. i will have to research that. time take some calipers home and make measurements. i won't be doing a wheel build myself, either way, so maybe i will have the shop handle that sort of issue.

my new tri bike comes home tomorrow, so the fixie conversion begins!

hello OP from toronto. i am also from the toronto area and have a 1990 cdale crit. it is currently torn down 'resting' in the basement but has served duty as a geared and ss commuter. if you must go fixed, get an ENO, no question. make sure you never put a 120mm rear axle wheel in the dropouts either as that is too much stress for a bike that notoriously removed peoples teeth.

care to post a picture? i'd like to see if your bike was once one of mine. in the past, i had a cannondale problem.

edit: i have no pics of mine as a singlespeed but here is the latest photo i have of it.

roadie

I vote for shimano roadie. Get tiagra or 105... so many cheap options out there.
