Just ordered my first fixie from BD

I come from the road bike community in San Diego, we moved to PHX and had kids so we ended up selling our bikes as we never rode anymore.

but now commuting to work and back, about 1.5 miles each way I wanted to get a fixie to save some gas

Ordered a white Windsor Hour from BD

I was contemplating the Kilo TT Pro gray/chrome on bikeisland as it was only 70 bucks more being scratched and not in factory box... but money is pretty tight right now (I barely got my wife to let me get the Windsor lol)

I think my commute is so small that it really wouldn't have mattered, and I like the white color.. eventually Ill have to get some white bar tape, a white seat, and a white wheelset... then i'll be totally hipster'd out yo!

Cool. White seats and bar tape get real dirty real fast. White wheelsets even more so. Just something to consider.

yeah I didnt think of that

maybe I should have got the matte gray color instead of white? hmm

I guess if I just stick with black tape, seat, and wheelset it'll still look good

I had a white frame and didn't have any major issues with that, but when I got the white wheelset, it made me want to die every time I got in from a ride.

that's awesome. ride to work every day for a few months and show your wife the cost of the gas you've saved!

the hour is a pretty great bike, it's almost as good a value as the kilo.

mullenium 02-13-12 10:03 AM

so the frame doesn't really get as dirty as the wheelset?

It's dry San Diego. Maybe your rear wheel will get dirty

living in Phoenix now.. but its even drier here lol (until the monsoons hit us)

Oh, I didn't even consider location. I was constantly riding through dirty puddles on the road and stuff. I suppose in dry conditions, it'd not be nearly as bad. The white will still get visibly dirty/dusty but I'm sure not as bad.

Very good idea and nice bike. I highly recommend a wax-based chain lubricant like White Lightning. Also, I see that you have a sense of humor, but a word of friendly advice: don't assume everybody here is a hipster or able to see your attempt at self- degradation. There are a number of traditional track racing enthusiasts and others. I am not trying to chastise as much as help you avoid the inevitable.

Take half of the money you're saving on gas, and put it in a special jar. Use that for 'rainy days' when upgrades are needed, and you still have a bit more money in the budged that wasn't there before. Everyone wins.

Congrats! Buy a Kryptonite Evolution Mini right now. And you should be good to go.
