your opinions on spicer frames
their track and pursuit frames!
|
thanx for starting this thread & asking about spicer. i am interested to hear as well, especially if anyone has actual first-hand knowledge with their frames.
since affinity lo-pro is never available, a while back i seriously considered spicer's pursuit frame but could not find any good info & moved on to other things. now i am sort of back in the market so hope you get some responses... |
Spicer is hand made in the usa and its one of the cheapest custom frames you can buy.
|
a friend of mine has ridden a spicer frame since 2007 or so and loves it. It's very well made, light and really reasonably priced considering they're hand-built and domestic

they aren't making aluminum track frames any more if those are the ones you were looking at.

looking at their steel pursuit frame. the 53 actually

ugly dropouts are a deal breaker

I like mine a lot. Fits nicely, really good customer service. I asked him if he could make me a larger bike than the stock sizes and he was just like "yep gimme a few weeks" and it showed up. Excellent communication. Overall I think I got the best deal one could for $400, considering I already had a fork. Bought another fork off him a bit later because I wanted it unpainted and threadless.
He uses huge chainstays which you really feel when you're out of the saddle. I'm usually pretty whatever about "stiffness" and "weight" and stuff but when you stand up on the thing it doesn't rock around at all. Other than that, it weighs like 20 lbs complete and is made of indestructable straight-gauge cro mo. Shame the thing is sitting in pieces in my shop, needs new wheels. |
pics of yours?

Here it is when I got it, though it's been through some iterations since. e: here's another. http://i.imgur.com/2Sl0Kl.jpg If I could go back in time, I'd have asked him what he could do for greater tire clearance and fender bosses, but really it would be a different frame then and not so cheap. If I can get this bike together soonish I'll put up another picture, I want to put on some real nice parts. |

ok here's mine after putting it back together today:
http://i.imgur.com/y13ik.jpg e: things I'd forgotten are that it rides really harshly and is uncomfortable. Still feels really solid and dead straight when you step on it but you feel it on the bumps. I've got 28mm tires on there and I'm gonna try letting some air out. Also it has aggressive positioning, so maybe if you order ask gene if you can have a longer head tube or something. For street use that is. |
