Honestly, how bad are Aerospoke wheels?

I am personally a huge fan of the look of a 3-5 spoked wheel on a bike. I've browsed around at some Hed3's and they look great, but usually cost anywhere from $400 to $800. Aerospokes are much less, but still give the desired effect.

So, are they laughably bad, or what's the deal? I've seen very little love for them on this forum.

The majority of most builds containing an aerospoke come over as jackass to the BFSSFG community. Usually the build is strictly for aesthetic enjoyment and doesn't have a good assortment of quality parts. A general theme similar to the demographic that want hi-ten republic bikes because they have flashy colors, whom are looked down upon by our shallow forum cult. Here on BFSSFG, it is my understanding that the majority value function>form and the functional item better not be flashy and/or overpriced.

The instant you tighten down the allen bolts of the hub your bike has a 60.9473946346% chance of instantaneous combustion. The more unorthodox the color, the greater the likelihood. They are that bad that you not only just put your bike at risk but also life and limb. Be careful. We have lost many, many great members, friends, and loved ones here who were maimed and victims of these wheels. Never to ride a bicycle ever again.

I had one. I liked it a lot for what it was.

I also bought it for $75 and sold it a year later on eBay for over 300 bucks.

eh, I like mine. get em if you like the look and want something generally strong. don't get em if you're not ready to push their weight. i'm one of those jack-arses who enjoys em on arguably the dumbest/heaviest tire and wheel combos you'd want to ride fixed *shrug*

Why do you need anyone's permission to ride them? Are you concerned whether they are structurally sound? Do not pay attention to the folklore: they will NOT explode from underneath you. If anything: they cannot be trued. So if you ever hav a little oopsie on it: its trash. If anyone ever hates on you: tell em A.Y.H.S.M.Ballz!

The backlash against aerospokes are due to the fact that they were so popular that they got played out. As with any fad that isn't based on anything substantial, what is hot now will be loathed later. For example, Nike Dunks don't do anything better than any other sneakers, but they had a following...then a bigger following...then people went ape-crap over them. Then the bubble burst and people how hate them.

But, if you like dunks and that's your thing and you don't care WTF people think, then rock the heck out of them. Same goes for an aerospoke.

I think HED3's destroy Aerospokes in every category except for price, but I wouldn't be opposed to ever owning one. They do look cool.

That being said, Nike Dunks suck. AF1's are where its at (Nelly says so). I'm glad they aren't "cool" anymore. I found a white pair with black accents at a Nike outlet for ~$30.

Had to get me stompin in those Air Force One (big boys).

You're saying that in vans & sidi territory. You better watch your back from here on around these parts now.

tbh I find aerospokes much less jackass then HED3's, I mean people are ridding this crazy expensive front wheel for no benefit whatsoever other then looks, if it's just for look at least aerospokes are half the price (sometimes less).

Air Jordan ones are much better than Dunks....

If you have to run an aerospoke I recommend a 28c (or larger tire) to smooth out the ride

weight and inability to true are issues for me, but i run B43's on one build so obviously weight isn't that big a deal.

my current ceiling on an Aerospoke is $150. if i can grab one for that, i'll try it out. eBay seems to be around $250-300 right now. i can wait....

i just recently got an aerospoke (just to see what the hubbub was all about) and i'm not terribly impressed with it. i usually ride the normal openpro/formula concoction, and it reminds me of my b43 set up i sold. went over the bridge with them into the city today (at 630am..) and was not having a good time. plus it was 20deg...

i'm gonna rock it for a while, just to get all my cut-off-jeans tendencies out of me, then i'll flip it on ebay and save up for something truly awesome...

I get the appeal of the 3-5 spoke wheel look, but it's just another ''look'' you get over eventually. If you are really diggin' it, hold off for something at a local bike swap or craigs. I ended up paying less for something legit, than I would have for an Aero-joke at my last local swap.

This. If it weren't for the smokin deal I got on my lolergy I probably would never have bought one. Buy it if it's cheap - I don't think they're worth the $300 hipster tax. You could get so many better wheels built for that price if you can live without carbon.
