fixed on ice. re: tires

so this recent blast of arctic love that boston recieved has me thinking about the upcoming months. first thing i do when i get back to town and return to work is get new tires. im riding 700x18 wheels /w bontrager race lite tires and am wondering if there are any tires out there that'll make much of a difference.

this is my first winter here, should i be concentrating more on taking it easy in ****** conditions or putting money aside for a new wheelset?

Came off on ice on Monday on similar tyres; I was thinking maybe Michelin Jet 700x30 'cross tyres for the next month or two. If I can find them in green :)

I've looked, and I've never found 700c studded tires of any sort. I'm thinking the luggiest cross tires you can find are your best bet. Beware fork clearance, though.

I finally gave up and decided I'll just have to ride my mountain bike on really icy days...

nashbars 90 studs cheapest
nokians 106 studs
schwalbes 120 studs

lots of options for differing terrain! the nokians and schwalbes are about the same price. nokians are a tad narrower than the schwalbe. schwalbes have the reflective sidewall, i dont really like it though.

Studded's pretty silly around here for the most part. It gives you traction on ice, but how often do you ride on ice?

Usually it's snow, slush, or just dry pavement. Slicks are best when it's dry out, and something with tread are best the rest of the time. In 700c that'll be CX tires.

Oh, and 18mm is really silly. If you want something for bad weather, start at 25mm and go up.

Well, I ended up with a pair of Hutchinson Gold Pro 700x30z, which just sneak into the clearances under my front brake and at the back. Damn track frames and their fagpaper clearance. Great grip on slithery mud and wet gravelly filth - not had any snow or ice since, but I trust them.

Now where's that 21t sprocket? I got me some scorching to do...
