uncommon crankset setup

what kind of crankset is this?

does it make sense to have two chainguards?

this setup looks pretty cool, IMHO, and it seems like it would be good for protecting your pants.

what do you think?

That looks similar to what they do on single front/multiple rear setups, to keep the chain from popping off. Huh.

For looks.

It also keeps your pant leg/shoelaces/varmin out of your chain ring.
I dunno why there's also a guard on the inside, looks maybe... A guard on the out side will do all all the protecting.

And when you've got a conversion like mine that will require the chainring to be on the inside of the spider, it'll fill the ugly spot where the other chainring goes. At least that's what I'm going to do :D

They got a set of those down at Trophy here. Apparently they are cyclocross specific, i guess 2 chainguards double the protection. Pricey too.

Do you know who makes them?

I can't remember, but i'm pretty sure it was a company i'd never heard of. I think they were around $245 too. Pretty though.

the chainguards on both sides are there to keep the chain from falling off the 'ring, not to keep your precious pants from getting caught/torn/greasy. cyclocrossers use them because they often will use only one chainring in the front and gears in the back. a little extra insurance for when the road gets a little bumpy.

edit the second: $299 for that crankset is ridiculous.

why is $299 ridiculous? a sugino 75 crankset runs about $200, and if you were to add a coupla guards, you're getting close to $300. quality seems comparable from what i can tell: TA gets high praise from sheldon brown, and as you note, the company has been around longer than your mom. i'm not following your logic...

first of all, a sugino75 crankset can be had for $160, with ring, if you know where to look. second, $299 you can get old school dura ace road cranks, or campy cranks that are the same style for like, $60, then get the guards separately for probably about the same.

paying $300 for a single speed crankset is a taaaad ridiculous, guards or not.

i think that bikeworks has them for 175.

alfred e. bike has 'em for $156. i think they probably just have them drop-shipped from QBP or something, because there's no way they could afford to stock them so cheaply.
