How much of a PITA is a rear rack with track ends
Hey there folks.
I've got a nice SS cross bike with track ends, and it's going to be forced into duty as my daily commuter until I can save for something more appropriate - probably a cross bike with gears. Anyway, I have it set up with fenders right now that I can easily break away from the frame to remove the rear wheel. How much of a PITA is it going to be to change a flat (which I tend to get only rarely) if I put a rack on there as well? Is there way to install the rack that'll make it easier? I do NOT want a seatpost mounted platform / rack thingy, but a real rack. I'm thinking of the Axiom Streamliner ... http://www.axiomgear.com/products/ge...iner-road-dlx/ |
unless you're hauling 25-30+ lbs -- get the soma porteur rack for the front, goes onto the axles :)

I take my back wheel off constantly, the rack is nowhere near getting in the way. I'm running pretty big tires too...

I have a slight issue with my rack bolts interfering with the track nuts. Basically have to take the nuts almost all the way off to get the wheel out and have to be careful with chain length as there is about 1/8" of track end that I cannot use.

This looks great; I only wish velo orange's porteur rack had axle mounts instead of fender mounts =/
unfortunately I don't think I have a photo of it without waste blocking the view of it http://www.pedalroom.com/p/leader-72...on-4166_14.jpg |
It's not the rack that gets in the way. It's the fender.

/Redline 925 otherwise, it must be a good design. |
If you care about handling of your bicycle at all: what kind of noob recommends rack in the front instead of the back? Obviously the back rack is superior when it comes to maneuverability
|
hence the disclaimer about weight loads.
I prefer front racks, seeing as I'm (nor is the OP) not touring on a track bike, and since he didn't have eyelets, that's just another reason why I recommended him the soma, since he seemed to have no trouble locating a rear one on his own :) he should just grab this http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...43089955_n.jpg |

But thanks. I've managed to sort it out, though I'm also considering just putting my SSCX back in full cross mode and getting something more appropriate for commuting. Dunno. But I'm sorted for now, thanks. |
