Rear Rim Choice

So i've got my tri spoke in the front and i'm looking to put a sturdy wheel thats lightweight in the rear...I kind of had my mind set on the velocity fusion, but i thought i'd ask you guys on the forum for your opinion...What are you guys running? Or what do you suggest? Price range is moderate...No zipps for a 1000 dollars.

dansjustchillin 04-04-12 12:40 AM

A Velocity Fusion is a reasonable option IMO.

Elvo 04-04-12 01:33 AM

Mavic Comete

adriano 04-04-12 05:35 AM

comete would work well here.

open pro; if you want superstiff/strong go 36h

velocities are soft like warm butter

This is ridiculous. A poorly built wheel - regardless of what rim is used - will suck.

I've built quite a few Velocity wheels and none of them have been like "warm butter".

Open Pro is a light weight racing clincher and somewhat soft like other rims in its category.

Velocity DeepV and Fusion are middle-weights in their class an can be used for everyday commuting, single speed, etc.

=8-)

Delgado rims. I live and die by them daily.

Kol.klink 04-04-12 04:14 PM

Ambriosio make some nice stuff, although only their tubular rims are light....

Velocity rims aren't that great.

Really just go Mavic or DT and be done with it, if that's to pricey, check out some ambrisios they're a little cheaper.

they can build up to a nice round true wheel no doubt.

but the aluminum is just soft. i ride some gravel daily and i have had to pull dents out of my deep v many times. i had an aerohead with the same problem.

never dented a sidewall on a mavic...

i also mountainbike quite a bit and saw the most ridiculous flatspot i have ever seen on a velocity...

if you have cash for a quality wheel you'll be hard pressed to beat an open pro laced by a good wheelbuilder to a reliable hub. maybe boring but true...

oh and good call on the delgados too if your going with bigger tires.

Soil_Sampler 04-04-12 05:50 PM

semi aero

27mm Kinlin or CXP33

Kol.klink 04-04-12 05:53 PM

+1 the only rim i've never flat spotted(without a car sending my bike flying 30 feet in the air) was a velocity aero head, They can make nice wheels but are on par with Alex or Sun rims in terms of quality but cost 20-30$ more per rim.

The Aerohead is also a light weight racing clincher that is even softer than the Open Pro. Hole stress presents itself upon building and cracking at around 20,000 to 30,000 miles out is not unexpected, much like the Open Pro that has eyelets.

+1000 on the CXP-33

It's a light weight AERO racing clincher...but it'll hold better than the Open Pro and Aerohead...

soft rims? what?

yeah, they're actually made of fruit roll-ups. Those australians are pretty crazy.

Nuggetross 04-04-12 06:38 PM

i almost like that joke, but american velocities are made in the usa now.

well... mine were made in austrailia, and they were strawberry flavor.

Scrodzilla 04-04-12 06:44 PM

The American ones taste like Taco Bell.

I mean, it's not that light. Get a Velocity A23...So I can live vicariously through you!

jdgesus 04-04-12 07:21 PM

english is a very hard language to learn, this is very true

johnnytheboy 04-04-12 08:08 PM

i've seen more open pro's crack at the eyelet than i care to remember...
velocity ftw...
that being said, all rims will fail eventually...i've had to replace 2 of my rhyno-lite's due to cracking...but that was after many, many hard miles...
it seems like mavic's just aren't as tough.
sorry if post is hard to read....IPA is good.

Scrodzilla 04-04-12 08:10 PM

As much as the Mavic lovers hate to admit it, their quality has definitely gone downhill over the past few years. I stand by Velocity.

xavier853 04-04-12 08:52 PM

cxp33 are not that light at all. But they hold up for a long time. solid rim.

dev0415 04-04-12 09:16 PM

thank u guys for all your input
