Cracked EAI cog, how did it even happen?

Hey everyone, I had just swapped my cog and when I finally checked it for the first time since last April (didn't really re-grease it since I knew it already had a good amount of grease between the treads). And well, when I took a closer look I saw a crack. How exactly does the cog crack? Use over time? Durability issues with EAI cogs? Luckily I switched it out sooner than later, another crack was starting to develop, but had not gone the whole way yet. There were plenty of chips as you can see in the picture... Anybody had this issue before? |
Never even heard of that happening.
Not to sound typical, but you should've went with Dura Ace lol |

I've never seen any cog crack like that. You should contact Dave Lundegard at EAI.

Have you only had the cog since last april? Or was that the last time you greased?
I just got an EAI cog (17t) and this is kind of disconcerting. |

I just got an EAI cog (17t) and this is kind of disconcerting. I just picked up a 17t EAI Deluxe as well and installed that yesterday. Double checked everything but now I'll have to do more monthly maintenance. |

And that's exactly what I did! Dave replied back this morning and told me to ship it in to them and they will replace it at no charge.

Manufacturing defect; nothing you can really do when riding will break a cog.
Unfortunately, brittle failures like this can occur with hardened steel. |
whoa. definitely one for the QC folks.
i used to deal with knife manufacturers. one bad batch of steel can cause all sorts of mayhem. glad they got on it for you. |
