Nashbar hounder assembly guide?
I've just purchased the nashbar hounder, and I've read many posts about people saying that the assembly is not easy for anyone who has not done it before. Would anyone be willing to make a guide on how to assemble the bike? I would take it to a local bike shop, but there aren't any near my location and I don't drive.

Is the process for assembling all fixies pretty similar then?
|
in essence, yes

wow. No one involved in making that instructional video knew what a "stem" was?

I actually have a Nashbar Hounder that I ride sometimes. I don't remember enough to write an assembly guide, but I would probably be able to answer questions if you have any.
One thing I remember was the brake situation. I didn't feel safe with their tin foil brakes, so I bought new ones. Because it has "old skool" brake mounting, I ended up needing to buy 2 front brakes and drilling the hole in the fork a little bigger. Also, I remember the wheels being terribly un-true. (false?). I spent a little time truing the wheels. Of course, I had to learn to true wheels as I trued these, so it was tons of fun. Other than that, I didn't have any problems. The crank looks stupid, but it still works 2 years later. |
There have to be youtube videos of the various steps in putting a bike together. You should have fun doing it and you'll learn quite a bit in the process. Zinn has a pretty good book out on bicycle mechanics; so does Park. You need mainly basic tools. There may be a bicycle co-op near you that can give you some advice. In any case, you want to learn how to work on your own bike. It will save you money and your bike will just ride better because you will stay on top of the maintenance.

She can still unscrew my stem expander bolt any time.

She's a dumbass. I wouldn't even talk to her.
|
How many times did she say "UnScrew"?
|
Best line : "For now, we're just gonna put that in there and tighten it up 'til we're ready to ride."
|
I don't think she used any lubricant in assembling the bike . . . :crash:

She's never touching my bikes tho. She's all Crescent wrench to install pedals. Crazy broad's gonna scratch up my crank arms! ;)
Honey, it's 3 AM, what are you doing out in the garage at this hour ? Ohhhh nothing Sweetie, just admiring how well you assembled my new bike, go back to sleep and I'll be back inside in a few minutes. :) |

Fair enuf, don't think she tightened everything for my satisfaction just the same. But if she feels comfortable enough to ride the bike she assembled it's on her. Question is, how do you sneak away to tighten all the bolts after she assembled your bike ? That's a relationship breaker ? I can hear the dialog now ?

I can hear the rest of it too.
her: What are you holding behind your back like that ? Is that a wrench ? him: Oh No, it's not a wrench, silly, whatever gave you that idea ? her: Come on now, let me see both of your hands in front of you right now. him: Do I really have to ? As he slides the wrench under the waistband of his underwear behind his back. And then shows her both his hands. her: apologizing, I just had this weird thought that you were out here working on that bike after I assembled it with such TLC for you ? him: like I said, go back to sleep and I'll straighten up just a few more things out here in the garage and be back in before you realize it. A clean work bench area makes for a happy garage. |
I guess I should stop checking this thread if it is becoming pseudo-bike erotica.

I just put one together yesterday. It is really simple and I haven't put together a bike in years... As for the brakes, you'll have to install the front brakes but you can use the rear brakes (already assembled) as a model. I had to tweak the rear brakes for optimum performance. Basically all you need to do is mount the stem, front wheel, install front brakes, pedals, insert seat post (seat already installed on seat post) and the brake wire clamps on to the top tube. That's it. Please learn from my mistake and don't mess with the rear wheel locking nut or cones. I got into a bolt tightening frenzy and for some stupid reason I messed with the rear wheel locking nuts and after buying a new tool and hours of adjusting and a trip to my LBS, I finally got it right (so I think).
Just assembled this yesterday, heres mine: http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=252413 Only thing I really changed were pedals (cheap Wellgo Platforms I had from another bike), Truvative Stylo Team bars and Truvative Stylo Race stem I picked up brand new on craigslist for super cheap, a nice aluminum 27.2mm stem I purchased for a beater bike that I recently sold, and a nice cannondale seat from my road bike that I removed for an upgrade. |
