I try to wear one any time I ride on the road or go mountain biking. (Exception being biking between classes)

I've got a bontrager quantum. I just needed something that fit me and was in my price range. I might go for one of those bonktown/chainlove bargain helmets one of these days

This is my first month riding with a helmet,

I knew I would only wear one if it was really comfortable so I was okay buying something a little pricey that fit really well.

FWIW, a cheap one, <$40 protects just fine.

I used to roll around in my Ford Fiesta with no seats. Sometimes milk crate for a seat. Then I scored all these kindergarten seats so I drove with one of those. No seatbelts ever!

Scariest driving I did was rollin' Ford blank truck chassis. We were driving them off the train all way high up in the air, just one seat, the chassis and engine. Not having a windshield, dash, doors, etc made for an interesting sensation.

I used to have a Giro Saros, found it a little too big with the M size that I bought, even with the ratchet tightened all the way. My girlfriend had an S size Giro Atmos, and that was too tight even with it loosened all the way. Then i got this:

Most comfy helmet ever! Lazer nailed it with the roll-sys system. Seriously, everyone's head is different, so why should the adjustment be only limited to the rear of the helmet?

Cheap helmets FTW.

Kinda surprised how few here are wearing those "urban" helmets like Scrod.

I wear the cheapest helmet available on Amazon when I was looking, a brown Six Six One brand BMX style helmet. Looks really stupid, but it cost like twelve dollars shipped.

Not trying to stir it up, but I'm curious - what makes a pricier helmet better than a really cheap one? Is it just a matter of weight and breathability, or are there other factors?

I've got a Bern Brentwood coming. I currently wear a cheap-ass department sore Bell that fits my head better than any helmet ever, except the chin strap is too short. I had a Bontrager Quantum, but it didn't fit my head very well so I sold it.

That's pretty much it. More expensive helmets often have more adjustment options too.
If these are important factors to you, then the price is considered worth it.

Part of the premium comes from the research done in order to make the helmet lighter/more comfortable/etc.

(I wear cheap helmets.)

Bell Array - $60 at my LBS. The sides are a bit thick, but the farther I can keep my head from the pavement, the better, I guess.
