Embrocation, SPF, etc.

This may very well go into the roadie forum, but I figured people here do like riding their bikes, and people here are quite analytical and choosy, so here goes...

Anyone here use embrocation? Embrocation with sunblock?

My kneecaps are starting to look like old pieces of beef jerky. Given my current age (29) I cannot afford to age faster.

What does everyone use? What would you guys recommend? I need to keep my legs smooth and silky.

I had to go look up what that means. At first, I thought it was some weird bromance thing.

This was sort of helpful: http://www.bicycling.com/cyclocross/...mbrocation-101

At a local cyclocross race last fall, I noticed a new rider observing quizzically as an elite racer rubbed a pungent amber substance over his calves and thighs. It was cold and rainy, but the racer rolled to the start wearing nothing more than a helmet, shoes, and a long-sleeved skinsuit.

"Won't his legs get cold?" the rookie asked a member of the expert's entourage.

"He's using some pretty powerful embrocation, so his legs won't get cold for hours," the person replied. "In fact, he's worried about overheating."

"Em-bro-cation," the newbie muttered. "I'll have to get some of that—whatever the heck it is."
I just use SPF50 sunscreen. Obviously can't help with the embrocation advice, since I didn't know what it was. :P

Ah, to be young again! :) At my age, my whole body looks like beef jerky!!! LOL (just kidding, but at 47, it's never going to look any better)

embrocation is kind of like icey-hot.
I only use it for cyclocross or really cold days where it's hard to warm up

sunscreen and lotion are the only things I normally use
just avoid oxybenzone sunscreens

I thought embrocation was just to keep you warm. Like just the Hot part of IcyHot. I don't see the benefit of that in summer. And yeah, I've only seen people using it at CX races, where you're only out in the elements for an hour at most.

Now sunscreen, I am pretty religious about using that, partly to protect tattoos, partly to not look like old leather, and partly to minimize terrible tan lines (though I still get them).

My wife is constantly on my ass about sunscreen, for much the same reason Kaz uses it. She hates my glove lines, haha.

Interesting...

Just read that embrocation is a sort of barrier against cold weather?

Rubbing some into my legs would apparently keep them warmer in the cold, so there is no need for leg warmers. I'd say it might just be perfect for ~51 mornings in SF.

Might give this stuff a try :

Just a little sunscreen on my ears. I don't burn all that easily.

There is only one embro that is SPF certified and that is HIBROS Summer Thermal Cream. Other embros can and do have some spf properties, but most are not SPF certified. I recently wrote all about the major non-warming embros on the market, here.

As for other Embro, we have a lot of reviews as well on the site.

One of the big things that people do not realize is that there are many different heat levels of Embro, including ones without any heat whatsoever. I use an embro every single ride all year long.

If you have any questions about embros, chamois creams, and recovery products dont hesitate to post up here or shoot us an email.
