IRO Rob Roy!

I recently bought an IRO Rob Roy frameset. I also bought an Easton EC90x fork. The previous owner had his set up with this fork and it was just sexy.

This bike will be replacing my Crosscheck as my fat tire go to bike. All the parts with the exception of the cassette, derailleurs and shifters will transfer over. The crankset will either be the DA set currently on the Crosscheck or pair of rival compact cranks I just traded a pair of Force cranks with my dad for. He bought me a brand new pair of rival cranks and I gave him the pair of force cranks I only payed 80 for. Win, win as I like the way these look on the crosscheck/IRO more.

Anyways, for those of you too lazy to click a link and look at my crosscheck Here is the list of parts transferring over:

Shimano Ultegra/Mavic Open Pro/ Kenda small block 8 wheelset
Either Rival or Dura ace cranks
Cane Creek 40-series headset(actually buying a new one, but whatevs)
Controltech Newton 3AR stem
Modolo Ergo Bars
Sram S900 Carbon Levers
Lizzardskins DSP Bartape
Tektro Cantilever brakes

Anything I forgot?

Waiting on my headset to arrive, but I should have this thing built up within the week!

Mental checklist time,

Seatposts the same size (seatpost clamp?)? How about rear spacing? Headtube? Other than BB, those are the big three.

How about housing/cables? How do you plan to hang the front brake cable?

Maybe I should be a little more specific. Components are transferring over. Cables, and housing if need be, will be all new. The seat and post are not transferring over, but yes, they are the same size.

I am just curious, why did you decide to go with the rob roy instead of just converting the crosscheck to ssfg? Are you keeping the crosscheck?

It popped up on the velospace marketplace and I knew then I wanted it. It's not that I want to go single speed as opposed to geared, I just want a change. And yes, I am keeping it. I'm going to build it back up with a 9 speed Record group I have and then let my friend who wants a road bike ride it.

OK, i see. Always good to have something different. In fact, that is why i got the crosscheck in the first place, it can be many different things.

Good luck with the build!

Likely this:

I can tell you from experience that you will have much fork shudder with a setup like this. You want the cable stop as close to the fork as possible. If this will be a daily rider then just get mini-v's and never think about it again.

Its still a work in progress on what I'm actually going to do, but with that setup, the hanger wouldn't be that much higher than a crown mounted hanger.

I might do something DIY like this or make a 1" hanger work.

FWIW, shudder isn't about height as much as it's about what's moving as one unit. A fork mount will always work better because it's anchored to the fork itself.

I can't use a fork mounted hanger on the EC90x like I had on the surly so I'm just doing the best I can. I have an idea that involves the fender mount on the back of the fork, but I'm only going to share it if it works.

I would recommend that you just get these and be done with it.

I went through all the steps and this is where I ended up.

Or just get a regular headset-spacer front cable hanger like this one: https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...&category=1613

And set up your canti's properly. Many years running different cantis on different forks on a few different cross and touring bikes, never have issues with fork shudder once the brakes have been properly setup. Anything from Paul Neo Retros to Tektro Oryx to Avid Shorty and Shorty Ultimates, no problems with a regular hanger.

With most forks I would agree with the 2 comments above but the EC90x is really light (one of the lightest CX forks on the market) and really prone to shudder. I have two of them. I'm just sharing my experience and trying to help out the OP.

Small Edit: My comments were aimed at a bike that is to be ridden on the street daily. If this is intended to be just a CX racer then brakes matter much less. The last thing I want while is traffic is my front end shaking all over the place as I'm trying to slow down.

I will take that recommendation to use mini-vees, but first I'm going to use what I have. I'm trying to keep the budget for the build down to a minimum.

I am also in the process of building up a Rob Roy.

I got it from the BFSSFG group buy many, many moons ago. My other ride was stolen recently, so it is finally getting the attention that it deserves. Nothing fancy right now...mostly building it from spare parts to get rolling again.

Here's a ****ty photo of it so far, next to my other project - rebuilding an engine from a '77 VW Westfalia Deluxe. Definitely not as fun as building up a sweet bike.

Phil's a good guy. He misquoted me the shipping price and didn't even ask me to pay the difference. I said I would and he only asked for half ($10) of the difference.

My headset was supposed to be here yesterday, but it looks like it might be a week til it is.

Suspicions confirmed, there will be little room for a traditional steerer tube mounted hanger. I stuck the fork on my crosscheck tonight, which has a shorter headtube, and there was just barely enough space for a 10mm spacer.

It was then brought to my attention that I have a pair of Shimano XT v-brakes and a pair of travel agents at my disposal.

So you are all getting your way.

I got my headset in today. since it is the same headset as the crosscheck and I don't have the crown race off the easton, I just stuck the surly fork on for now. Whatcha think?
