track specific / keirin components on road fixed gear bicycles - bad idea?

Hey everyone,

Would you recommend against using Keirin / Track components on a Fixed Gear bike intented for road (city) use?

Just because I was thinking of trying the Hatta BB and and Headset on my next Road / City Fixed Gear build (https://www.tracksupermarket.com/inde...6sj9sv2r20q757) .. but thinking about it, those are all open bearings and not sealed like the ones used by shimano, phil wood..

Thanks,

BlackPowder

If you ride in decent conditions, you don't necessarily need sealed bearings. That being said, I'd still recommend sealed cartridges, infinitely less maintenance. There is also no point dropping the extra coin because it's stamped.

When do you plan to race keirin?

I think VO or Ben's Cycle, cant remember, sells an appropriate sealed BB that you should use instead.

I use the protype bb for my 75s because they were the most inexpensive option. I didn't have the dough to drop for a hatta/75/68/superlap #ballerstatus bb or else I would have one.

There it is. I haven't heard any issues, but it would be pretty hard to **** up a sealed BB.

It's not a bad idea. It just requires a more knowledgeable and intensive approach to maintenance. As well as requiring more tools.

That said, unless you actually ride in the rain, loose ball headsets and bottom brackets generally don't need much servicing beyond checking every 4-5 months and replacing the grease every year or so.

Nothing wrong with NJS components, except the NJS logo usually commands a price premium without commensurate performance improvement.

Yup. Typically NJS parts are really nice, and look great with keirin frames, and cost more. That's about it.

I still really, really want one in a terrible way. A fully NJS bike. I will never be satisfied.

OK thanks guys I think I will go with the NJS parts, the maintenance doesnt sound too bad..

since were talking about it, what about those track hubs from shimano, the Dura Ace HB7600 hubs? (https://www.tracksupermarket.com/inde...roducts_id=260)

do they have loose ball bearings, too?

shouldnt be to much of a problem for road use, either.. ?

C'mon man, did you even read the description for the link you posted?

The hub is double sided, high flange, with very fast, loose open bearings.
