WalMart FG/SS

In Walmart today. Noticed the bargain bikes. FG/SS really not badly built and cheap. What got me to take a phone photo was the display of the bikes over first aid kits. :D

LOL @ the first aid kits below as well.... conveniently located if you have no regard to your own well being and end up buying one.

I'll just leave this here to expedite the inevitable thread merge.

Best part of the thread!

Old news? Hey, not so fast - the update is they are not $99.00, they're cheaper. The colors are new - and much worse. Plus you're invited to get a 1st aid kit - which you'll need when the parts start falling off.

I saw them lined up outside on the sidewalk at the WalMart in Waco, TX when we were down there in May picking our daughter up from Baylor. They were so COLORFUL! I resisted walking up to them and inspecting, mostly because my wife was with me and she would have frowned on wasting time while there. I wish I had had my camera, though.

Waco is dang hot and windy. I don't think I'd want to ride there past 9:00am ever.

Absolutely, at the end of the day, you're pedaling it just the same. If it rides for years, you're way ahead of the game. Very few keep the same bike forever and since most are thrown away as disposable, these bikes are far and away cheaper than even an annual bike share membership. The membership for decobike is $ 15/month, this bike would be 1/2 price. I'd gamble this would last a year and even if you threw it away or gave it away, still way ahead of $ 180/year or several hundred for a BD or better.

$90 ain't bad neither!

bikemig 06-09-12 07:02 AM

I like these bikes a heck of a lot better than the usual pile of junk you get in a department store bike that mimics a mountain bike. The brakes don't work, the gears don't work and the suspension is pretty bad. This bike looks like it might be rideable for $90 and I think it glows in the dark as well!

That bike is still a pile of junk, just without gears or suspension.

lol, you're probably right but the idea is could make sense. WM could built a decent one speed bike at a low price point. What the heck, it has to work better than a multispeed WM bike.

rumrunn6 06-09-12 07:43 AM

there is a market for cheap bikes. remember the Ford and VW mottos of making a car for everyone?

AristoNYC 06-09-12 08:15 AM

maybe if I had to chain the bike outside a train station if I worked far from the train, I've messed with a WM bike before however, not worth it.

xavier853 06-09-12 08:27 AM

I'm waiting unti they drop to $50.

Something to be said about a bike that's an everyday rider, that can be locked up outdoors and the owner can feel comfortable that it will still be there to ride ?

Especially when the lock costs as much as the bike! ...speaking of the WM bikes: I am seeing more and more of them this spring in Brooklyn - looks like $88 hit the spot with a lot of people. NJS STAMPED THRUSTERS 4 EVERY 1
