Looking for a fork...
 

I'm having the darndest time finding anything to fit anywhere close to these criteria, from most important to least:

700c and threaded. Not too tough so far...

I have a pretty tall 170mm head tube (not sure on which headset I want to use quite yet), so I need a 1-inch steerer tube that's long enough to fit or cut down. Almost definitely looking for something well over 200mm...

I'm looking for something as close to the original rake as possible, which is about 28mm by my measurements. I'd like to stay within a few millimeters...

Preferably drilled for a front brake...

Preferably a welded unicrown, to match the one that used to be on there...

Preferably chrome-plated, to match the rest of the frame...

A lot of requirements, but any help locating a similar item would be appreciated. A car pulled up too far, pinned my old one against the bike rack, and now it's bent to toast. It came with the frame, which has no decals, numbers or markings that I can find. Basic welded CrMo steel frame, chrome plated, track geom. w/ matching fork.

iirc soma makes (or made?) a chrome 1" threaded fork with 38mm rake
or
there is a guy on fleabay that offers 28mm rake threaded forks in primer-like colors that you could get stripped & chrome-plated yourself

I think the ones they have at Soma now are 41mm rake, but you can still find the 38mm ones here and there. I thought about settling, but I don't know and am not excited to experiment with how it would affect the ride of the bike. Have any of you ever made a 10-13mm jump in fork rake on a steep track bike (74-75 head/seat tube angle)? My gut tells me that is not a good idea, but I've never experienced it, so I can't really say.

If it helps. It's just a city and path rider. I ride fast in straight lines sometimes, but no downtown traffic slaloms for this guy...

Soma still has their 1" threaded fork with a 30mm rake in stock - but it's only available in black. The chrome 38mm rake Tange Prestige version is also still available. Any bike shop with a Merry Sales account will be able to get you one.

What stock fork do you have with a 28mm rake?

Plus, let's be honest- say you wind up with the 30mm rake fork, do you really think you'll be able to sense a difference of 2mm over 36cm? Someone check me on this, but 2/360 = 1/180 = .005 = .5% difference. That's probably lower than a lower end manufacturer's QC tolerances.

Indeed. Combined with that long headtube, sounds unique. Might be worth getting something custom. I had a 30mm threaded fork made for my 63cm track bike for not too much, maybe $200?

I hear the guys at Viking Cycles are nice. The forks they use are EXACTLY what you're looking for. Contact them, see if they'll sell you a fork.

THAT is interesting. Looks like it might be able to be drilled for a brake. Definite possibilty. Thanks man. To answer your earlier question: I got the frameset from a garage sale, but it doesn't have any indication of brand or serial number that I can find. I can tell it's steel, but the 'ping' doesn't sound like a high-end tube of any kind. From everything I can gather and compare it to, it's just a basic, double-butted, welded steel frame, probably made in China or Taiwan. Got a slick, industrial look with the chrome and the visible beads. That fork you found may complement it well.

That makes it sound better, to be honest. I've just never really modified the fork rake on a bike. I'm not familiar with how if affects the steering.

I did receive it. Unfortunately, I can not reply to it until I have 50 posts, apparently. Do you have a measurement for the rake/offset for the fork you have? Also, is it chrome or another color? Finally, is it drilled for a brake?

After looking at the listed specs, the rake may not interet you as it is 43mm. It is chrome and is drilled for a brake.
