soma rush is almost done
ok so I've got my soma rush frame, fire engine red with black soma fork. Black 105 brakes, I'm going to be running this as a fixed & SS so front and rear will be used. I have a shimano ultegra BB attached to black 105 crankset and a 52 tooth Specialties TA 1/8th chain ring. The pedals will be mks platforms with steel cages, these will be powder-coated black. I'll be rocking nashbar bullhorn handlebars flipped and trimed to be used like conventional cruisser bars, attached to this will be tt bar end brakes and in line brakes levers. I'm going to be going with a king iris cage seen here: http://www.coloradocyclist.com/image...ingrcpsd02.jpg cause the is just dope (also will be powder-coated black). The wheel set is being built now, black surly 120 fixed/fixed hubs, black philwood spokes to mavic ma3 rims. The cog will be a soma 1/8th 20 tooth. I'll post pics as soon as possible.

I've been riding that frame for about eight mounths now and have nothing but good to say about it. Congrats on the purchase and that kit sounds pretty sweet. My buddy messegers on a very similar rig, the green Soma from a couple years back with Nitto promenade bars which sound a lot like your design. If you haven't already bought it, don't use the Soma cog. I have seen a couple that weren't quite round which leads me to suspect poor machining. I would get a Surly cog instead (just my opinion.) Looking forward to pics.

If you get a Surly get the new cog. My shop had them but I think they're trying to move the old stock first (natch) and I had to ask. It does indeed have more threads but it cost a few bucks more.

Or get the Dura-Ace. Excellent quality AND it's black. The bike sounds like a beaut. Remember, pics, pics, pics.....

DA only goes up to 16t. Otherwise I would have gotten it. In retrospect if I'd known how much room I had in my dropouts I might've gone 16t DA instead of 17t Surly and saved some money. Ah well.

Yeah, forgot about the 16t limitation. I ran into that too on one of mine and ended up going with a smaller chainring. It's EAI that goes above 16 right?

damn, i wish I knew the eai's came in black. I've heard that the surly cogs suck, are the new ones better? Trevor, where is your shop?

The old Surly cogs had a thinner threaded area so they had a tendency to strip threads on hubs. The new ones correct this. I shop at Broadway Bicycle School, Cambridge Bicycle, Community Bicycle Supply, Ferris Wheels, and occassionally Boston Bicycle. But most of the time I hit Broadway, nice folks, good thing they got going.

oh I thought you worked at a bike shop. I do most of my shoping at cambridge bikes. Maniez is a great guy.

so here are some pics of what is done so far, still waiting on the my brakes (damn ups), 52 tooth T.A. ring, and an EAI cog. I really like the way the bars came out.

Nice looking setup. Those bars are wacky though and so many levers it makes my head hurt. Do you really think you'll need all that?

Yeah, I figured as much but it just seems like those bars aren't so big that the levers wouldn't ever really be out of reach even with just two. But whatever works for you.

yeah i've had troubles with bullhorns and the road so i thought better then being sorry. I will prob find i don't need them, but i think they look pretty dope.

If your running a single speed, and appreciate that simplisity that such a drive train offers, I suggest that you transfer the state of mind to your braking set up and get rid of 2 or 3 levers, you'll find out later that your bike isn't a cruiser and your set is probably more than is required. On another note, and a pretty important one, "Black 105 brakes" if you are seriously considering racing Cross (which I very much doubt by looking at your set up) you will have jack mud clearence with those brakes and will be laughed at by many. However, bike is still Tits, just be more sure about what you are going to do with it, I don't plan on making my cruiser into a cross bike, so stop trying to make your cross mike into a cruiser.
