Looks awesome man, welcome to the family haha. The saddle is a tad uncomfortable, do you ride in bib shorts or any kind of padded bike shorts? I found that a pair made it quite comfortable.

Pinkbullet3 07-07-12 02:28 PM

That's a pretty bike. I hope you get a real thick U-lock for it. I'd hate to see it go...

Snapped a few pics this morning before it got too hot:

you summed up the handling pretty well. The acceleration is amazing.

Here is a closeup of my bike (with the track car in the background) on street tires and (mavic) wheels. Those light tires and wheels are saved for race day at the 'dome...

ianGP - please swap that aluminum Formula lockring for something made of steel. You'll thank me.

ianGP 07-08-12 08:20 PM

Thanks Scrod - funny, I was just reading up on aluminum lockrings a few days back. I wonder if Phil Wood cogs/lockring will work with my setup. They look purty. Otherwise, according to AC's website, Campagnolo bits would work on them.

@MCosby - at the time of my initial thoughts I just rode in my regular street clothes. I did ride it again today with padded bibs and it's much more comfortable. But I'll still keep an eye out for a different seat.

@Chas - you race Spec Miata? I did a tidbit a few years back and then jumped to formula mazda before going back to karts. Nice setup there.

ddeadserious 07-08-12 09:33 PM

Nice Sonic. Specs on the Subaru?

ianGP 07-09-12 09:00 AM

Thanks :)

Engine is pretty much back to stock - gonna get her back on the streets and retire my 7series.

Phil Wood cogs look nice but are loud as all hell.

Phil lockring is Italian threading, pretty sure AC is not.

Sonik '16

Digging this thread out of the graveyard...

Does anyone happen to know what size brakes I need for the 2016 Jamis Sonik? (With factory wheels and tires; 61cm frame.) Specs.

Thank you kindly!

Scrodzilla 09-07-16 08:11 PM

Frame size has nothing to do with wheel or brake clearance. Any short/mid reach caliper will work on your Sonik.

I just got the cheap basic Tecktro brakes from Niagara cycles:
Components - Brakes & Parts - Caliper Brakes - Caliper Brake Pairs - Page 1 - Niagara Cycle

not sure they still have what I bought. The Sonik has tight clearances, so you don't need a long reach.

I'm guessing somethign like this will work:
$28 for a pair
Sunlite Dual Pivot Brake Caliper - 1 Pair, Front/Rear, Black
or these are a little nicer:
Tektro R530 Road Caliper Set Front & Rear Silver

chas58 09-09-16 04:12 AM

Just checked. I have tecktro 350 brakes on mine.

TenSpeedV2 09-09-16 07:05 AM

I was riding one of these on the street and developed a nasty creak somewhere. Entire bike was stripped down and inspected at the shop and we could not figure out what it was. Ended up cannibalizing it and threw the the wheels, bottom bracket and crank on a Felt frame that I bought. BB looked great according to the mechanic, and I get no creaks at all in this frame. Fork and seatpost were also checked for possible cracks and nothing was found. I think it had a bad weld in the bottom bracket area and decided that with my weight that the frame was now questionable.

squeak

It could be the seatpost/clamp area?

Thought so as well. Removed both and took it for a spin. Same creaking.

johnnytheboy 09-10-16 10:13 AM

gumwall tires woulda solved the creak.

seau grateau 09-10-16 02:19 PM

That frame looks like it'd be a torture rack to ride on the streets anyway.

Nagrom_ 09-10-16 02:39 PM

Hubs or chainring bolts.

Gumwall tires solve nothing.

Frame was actually comfortable, and I swear I was faster on this bike than any other bike I have ridden.

Hubs/wheels and crank are on the current bike. No creaking.

TejanoTrackie 09-11-16 07:49 AM

I say gremlins.

TenSpeedV2 09-11-16 10:08 AM

If anyone wants to have a go at this 58cm frame in great condition, I mean I am just saying, it is sitting here, with the fork, seat post, and I even still have that matching saddle. I mean......

Sure would.

Basically any basic road bike caliper:
- Dual pivot caliper brake
- Dimension : 39 - 49mm (also known as "short reach" calipers)
