Pedal Straps - Budget vs. Durability

So I just purchased a brand new fixed gear. I am super excited to ride it, but I have some questions about straps. I have larger feet, so I equipped the bike with BMX style pedals and I was planning to purchase straps as opposed to cages. There is obviously lots of hype about Hold Fast, but they are a bit out of my budget. Also, Retrogression straps have been sold out forever! (or at least since I have been checking the site). So I have picked out a couple different options to run by you guys, hoping you have experience with them.

Cheapest - Retrospec Straps ($15)
http://www.amazon.com/Retrospec-Bicy...d_sim_sbs_sg_5

Middle - Wellgo Straps ($25)
http://www.amazon.com/Double-Pedal-S...=wellgo+straps

More Expensive - CKC Straps ($28)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hold-fast-CK...item1c271ba28f

To me, the CKC straps look the best, but I don't get why they are branded as Hold Fast . . . is it just some BS the seller is claiming?

Thanks in advance!

Andrew

I wouldn't purchase any of those and just save money for the proper purchase. Would you rather buy these straps once or more than once? I

What's wrong with the ones the OP listed?

I've heard of certain ones ripping, I can't remember which of those brands.

By the way, OP, I use HFS that I got for 24 dollars on eBay... Just narrow down results using "Auctions Only" rather than Buy It Now and you'll have opportunities to get them for cheap. (I love mine by the way)

I'd probably go with the Wellgos, but either of them I'm sure are fine.

I use clipless anyways sooooo

If I may - the Wellgo straps are garbage. I bought a pair a few months ago to see how they stacked up to the straps we make and a friend of ours who rides FGFS broke them after three days.

WELL THERE YOU HAVE IT.

Hahaha they all look the same to me and look like they do the same thing.

So in other words...this^

If you're riding fixed pedal straps are probably one of the more important parts of your bike and price difference between the least expensive and the most expensive is what? $35? Just seems like a silly place to cut corners. Buy some good ones.

The wellgo's are the same thing as the origin8 straps which I use daily, they work great considering they were only $15

Crandrew 08-15-12 03:50 PM

The origin8 get horrible reviews, so you might have lucked out. I would probably buy the retrogression straps since they are back in stock. Follow the link that Scrod posted...OTherwise I would get the hold fast.

Someone posted a link to Aurora straps a couple of days ago, those looked really nice.

These leather straps look great too ....... had I ran into these before I got my clips and straps I might have gone with them.

I have the Origin8 ones too, since one of my single strap buckles decided to break on me during a sprint. They're just temporary, but they're not terrible. I don't like the non-consistant foot placement of straps, but they're just a temporary thing. For all that though, they haven't fallen apart. More impressed than I thought I would be.

Unless the design has changed, I would stay away from the V.Track retro-gression straps. They're not very durable as constructed when I got my pair in December of 2011. The stitching on the straps failed within the first 500 miles. I had them fixed by a local seamstress who welded and stitched the velcro but it only lasted for another few hundred miles before it came apart again and by that point the velcro was frayed so bad they couldn't be repaired and I had to cut new sections and replace them that way. They're just too thin.

I bring this up because I'm guessing the CKC and Well-Go ones will have the same problem, they look like the same design. If I had to do it again I'd use Hold Fasts.

Of the nearly 400 sets we've made (ourselves, not in some Chinese factory) and sold, yours is the third I've seen that happen to. The V.track straps have also changed twice since we began making them and we now buy or supplies from a more consistent vendor.

You could have sent them back and we would have either repaired or replaced them for free. Just sayin'.

Dang yo.

markaitch 08-15-12 06:25 PM

please forgive me if this is not the right place to ask...

are those v.track straps compatible with wellgo r025s? the front of the pedal does not have slots to slip the strap thru, will it drop down & be hard to get into?

stryper 08-15-12 06:42 PM

Make your own straps, it's more fun.

nightfly 08-16-12 03:35 AM

Only issue I've had with Holdfasts that are now several years old is that the nylon trim at the from edge of the strap is shredded from hitting the pavement when walking bike. The Retrogressions don't have that trim, it's just pure seatbelt material so I would assume this wouldn't happen.

i used the retrogression V2 pedal straps with bmx pedals and they worked great for me. i never had an issue with them getting loose and easy to get my foot in and out. i ended up switching to clipless recently but i sold em to a buddy of mine and he is still using them with no problems at all. for the price i was very happy with them
