I'm addicted to fixed gear and SS!

Yep I'm outright addicted. I find my self checking out bike pr0n on fixedgeargallery.com several times a day. I can't stop thinking about the fixie that I'm building. I haven't even bought the track cog and lockring yet! I fantasize about going brakeless (2 brakes for me, especially at my weight) and cant wait until I can ride 42/15 fixed everywhere I go, even up big hills. I dream of catching up to, and passing roadies.

I'd say "help!" but I don't really want help. I like this addiction. Its sure beats 4x4's, what I used to be in. I could spend enough money just in tires to put together 2 or 3 fixed gear or single speed bikes....

You gave up monster truckin' for bikes?!!?!?!

jinx_removing 01-19-05 01:51 PM

Welcome to the Dark Side..... [/insert maniacal laugther here]

schwinnbikelove 01-19-05 02:08 PM

You're cute!

trekkie820 01-19-05 02:12 PM

The past two days have I have been zipping around on my fix have secured my fate. I love it, and I don't think that I will ride on the road without one, at least for now.

ostro 01-19-05 02:14 PM

Thats what i have been saying its a sickness, we must all be masochists!

You put the wheels back on?

trekkie820 01-19-05 02:26 PM

Actually, I broke a spoke on the single speed wheel, and since I don't have a freewheel tool, and the spoke broke on the freewheel side, I had to improvise so I could still ride. I used the Varsity wheel on the black Le Tour frame and really low clearence fork. I have a bike that looks like the Schwinn time-line.

trekkie820 01-19-05 02:28 PM

Oh, and since it's a Loctite fixed gear, I am doind an experiment. I marked a line where the cog meets the hub, and I am riding it like it was a normal fix. This will tell me if the cog moved at all.

Fugazi Dave 01-19-05 02:29 PM

He has been assimilated.

Excellent.

DKfix 01-19-05 02:34 PM

It's all part of the plan!

ImMilesDavis 01-19-05 02:36 PM

Ah yes... I know the feeling. The time I spend off the road, I spend at work thinking about riding or on the internet on this site or on a online store looking at parts I want to buy.... like right now! Ooww what kind of Brooks saddle could I get... oh look at those clips, and those tires! Crap I have no money!

rykoala 01-19-05 02:37 PM

Well I wouldn't call it "monster trucks" but I used to have a Toyota Land Cruiser project, on 35" mud tires, and it was alot of fun to work, doing engine swaps, transmissions, new brakes etc. But it was getting to be too expensive, and the work too time consuming.

What attracts me to FG/SS is the simplicity. Oh, the simplicity!

roadfix 01-19-05 02:37 PM

Welcome my child........ now let's all have some cool aid.....

Trust me, you dont need a line on the cog to let you know if a bum-bike-fixie-set-up has moved.
The line on your head from the impact will be obvious enough.
Come downtown to the co-op and get a used lockring cheap.
Now that you are part of the gang I feel some responsibility regarding your wellfare.

trekkie820 01-19-05 04:23 PM

No space for a lockring. If you happen to have a fixed gear hub, on the other hand...And, I assume were talking about Cleveland, and it's Ohio City Bike Co-op?

BlastRadius 01-19-05 05:03 PM

On my Trek bum-bike fixie, I had to find the narrowest cog available in order to fit a BB lockring on it. That ended up being a real cheap steel cog that looks like stamped steel instead of forged and milled. It's not a proper track lockring but I think it's better than no lockring.

Ahem, didn't I ASK YOU if you needed any bike parts before you left Sunday?

trekkie820 01-19-05 06:07 PM

Do you have a fixed gear hub?

schwinnbikelove 01-19-05 06:21 PM

Yup, I think I showed you before. :D It's similar to the hub on the Varsity wheel, but 28 hole with reverse threads. Schwinn Approved, Made in France. Like this one:

trekkie820 01-19-05 06:22 PM

Never seen it. How much would you like for it?

schwinnbikelove 01-19-05 06:35 PM

Well, mine is used, but I refabbed the finish (being the fanatical, nitpicky metalsmith that I am). Are you sure you want it as opposed to something sealed? I don't remember, I don't think I have the lockring for it anymore because I think it's on my bike. I could just add it to the tab and get a new custom frame from you one day... ;)

I'm totally just kidding. Let me dig it out...Ugh, I think the damn thing's at the bottom! Well, it must still be in the basement with my 'get rid of' pile. How's $10 sound, with a cheap meal sometime, you promise to take another bike part besides that, and consider the MS 150 ride?

trekkie820 01-19-05 06:56 PM

Okay. As long as you want to start riding more...I know, big arm twist. Sounds like a deal. Know a cheap wheel builder?

schwinnbikelove 01-19-05 07:05 PM

Ok, we totally hi-jacked this. Sorry guys!

Ryko, welcome to the club! Remember, you know where to find help if you need it! Yay!

Uh, I know a good wheel-builder. (Reggie's built mine)

trekkie820 01-19-05 08:05 PM
