Bicycle Speakers?

do any of you ride with bicycle speakers? something to strap to the handlebars or on the top tube or whatever?

i do 40+ mile bike rides with the wifey on sundays, and we were both thinking it would be fun to have some music playing. we mainly ride this long bike trail, and do laps on it (its 5 miles to the trail, then the trail is 10 miles)...

we got the the idea from this roadie we see all the time on the trail. he has a speaker on his bike. its not super loud but we sometimes try to catch up with him to listen.
I dubbed him "Ferrari Santana"....because he has this sporty looking red and white newer road bike, and he has a matching kit. and the first time we saw him he was listening to Santana. so everytime we see him its like "OMG its Ferrari Santana!!! lets try to catch up to him!" lol

anywho, im sure some of you might think speakers on bikes is kind of lame, but i think it would be a fun thing to have....

Have you checked out boombotix skullyboom's?

http://www.ladiesgadgets.com/wp-cont...our-Belt-2.jpg

I know some guys with them and they come in wired and bluetooth and a whole variety of styles and nonesuch.

The boombotix speakers are pretty rad. They have a 'whatever happens' warranty and one of my buddies has sent his back after a bad spill with quick turnaround. They are light enough to clip to a backpack or messenger bag and last a good few days of commute sans charging. I own one, bought one for a sibling and the lady. They are pretty rad little toys and the bluetooth connectivity is totally worth it. I have a five percent promo code that is RIDE DIRTY or ride dirty, or maybe there are no spaces when you type it in. Try a few different ways but it will save you 5% pre shipping costs. Enjoy.
(My brother and I have bb2's and the lady has a bb1. She doesn't have any devices with bluetooth connectivity so hers was about half as cheap and is a bit louder than ours.)

Do they charge via USB?

Bat56 08-25-12 11:47 AM

How do I charge my speaker?
Boombotix speakers includes a USB charging cable so that you can hook it up to your computer and charge it. Charging takes approximately one hour and will provide approximately 6 hours of playback time.

My radio's bad from the Boulevard
I'm a hip-hop gangster and my name is Todd
Just stimulated by the beat, bust out the rhyme
Get fresh batteries if it won't rewind
Cos I play everyday, even on the subway
I woulda got a summons but I ran away
I'm the leader of the show, keepin' you on the go
But I know I can't live without my radio

I had some ihome speakers that served me well until I splurged on a JBL Charge. It's not cheap but sounds great and has a long battery life with the ability to charge other devices. It also fits perfectly in a water bottle cage. http://www.jbl.com/estore/jbl/us/pro...US?searchMode=

Unless I'm riding with others, I have headphones in. Not too loud though, because you gotta be able to hear the sounds of the road.

wearyourtruth 03-28-13 07:27 AM

i use a JBL Micro Wireless. i have several friends who all have the skullyboom but i found the sound quality to be sub-par. sure you can only expect so much from a little portable speaker, but it was bad enough that i wasn't going to buy one of those. i opted for the JBL over the skullyboom because i don't care if my speaker looks like a squid or has purple stars on it, i want it to sound good. and JBL makes speakers, good ones. if i was 13 i might prefer the skullyboom but as an adult i have different priorities.

i will say, regardless of the brand you go with, riding with a wireless speaker is pretty awesome, no more headphone cords tangling in everything.

oh hey thread i started half year ago!
unfortunately i have not purchased any speakers. i had been looking at the "Tommyca"...
http://c745.r45.cf2.rackcdn.com/img/2009/tommyca.jpg

from what i recall it had pretty good ratings, and it seemed like it fit the bill for me...had am/fm, lights on the front, good sound (relatively), didn't look that bad IMO, AND was a standalone player (was an MP3 player itself)

however i never got around to buying one, and now it looks impossible to find them anywhere to buy. hmmm oh well.

SOOOOOO does anyone have any recommendations for a STANDALONE SPEAKER/PLAYER? (bicycle specific obviously)

i say Standalone IE the speaker itself is an mp3 player, as opposed to speakers you connect your player into, because.....well my iphone is my ipod. BUT i use my iphone for Strava/mapmyride, and im afraid the battery life of the iphone wont last a full ride running both mapmyride AND Itunes. (i use mapmyride for health insurance purposes....my work has this "Vitality" plan where you get points for workouts either at a gym or using mapmyride, and points translate to cheaper insurance)
