confused about wheelsets and tire sizes

I am looking to buy a new wheelset with a flip flop hub that can fit a 700x28c tire size. I currently ride on weinmann dp18's, which according to the sidewall can only fit tires up to a 23c. i went to a bike shop and asked the guy behind the counter what i should be looking for as far as rim size in order to accommodate a 28c tire, and he said the rim has to be about 20mm wide. that makes sense to me.

what doesn't make sense, is that in shopping for such a wheelset online has led me to dead ends. I've found a lot of wheelsets that i would totally buy if i were still into riding a 23c tire- origin 8 track attack, the eigthinch julian v2 or amelias, velocity, and state bicycle wheelsets. But it seems as though none of these models or brands can accommodate a tire wider than a 23c.

I am essentially looking for a wheelset that has a flip flop hub, machined sidewalls, and will fit a 28-32c tire. does anyone know of a company that produces such a wheelset?

All of the wheelsets you just listed can fit a 28.

I have 35s on my Sun CR18 rims. No problem.

Now, the CR18 is 18mm inside. I think the DP18 is 18mm outside, 13mm inside.

My cr18s are laced to formula hubs and I give them no special attention. They perform fine. I am gentle on them- up and down curbs, but no stairs. Off road is limited to trails with roots, no big rocks or drops.
My hub is a flip flop, I ride the bike fixed.

I am running 28's on my Velocity wheelset with no problems at all.

Your dilemma can be solved by following these three steps:

1. Buy 28c tires
2. Install 28c tires on your Weinmann DP18s
3. Ride your bike
