uh oh!
i was riding home from work and got about 50 feet and heard something metal hit the ground and immediately stopped and looked all over the place and i couldn't find anything. i checked my bike and couldn't find any missing crap so i guess i just ran over something and it kicked it up in the air..needless to say that was one sketchy ride home because i was expecting my bike to fall into pieces or something equally stupid. i'm sure everyone has had this kind of thing happen but it freaked me out.

make sure and check your chainring bolts. i had the same thing happen to me, and thought nothing of it until my chainring folded up like a taco because of a missing bolt.

that was actually the first thing that i checked because i am really paranoid about that happening for some reason.

Check your headset...those damn things seem to fall out at the most awkward times!

haha so i walk out of my room and for some reason look directly at my crank and realize that the dust cover was missing..i'm assuming that's what had fallen off since i heard it from that side of my bike. no biggie because i don't really need those things but i figured since i paid for the campy cranks i would use the freakin dust covers!

You want to use those. If those threads get damaged, getting your cranks off is a B!tch.

Apparantly a common problem. I had to drill a couple out on my current project, and mentioned to my bro that I was thinking of using anti-seize. He told me that most racers use locktite to hold them on, rather than anti-seize to make them easier to remove.

it is a good idea to check your derailleur hanger bolt as well- mine dropped off and I only noticed it when I was serivicing the drive train and I took the rear wheel off and the derailleur fell off the bike and was dangling by the chain. I loctited the new one on and check it every so often.

Actually proper penance would be to spend a weekend knee deep in the Hofbrauhaus. Drink beer and flirt with the lovely german ladies.

i hate those awful metal sounds. i heard one the other day and jumped straight off my bike. it turned out id run over a coat hanger or something so i calmed down a bit. yesterday though i kept hearing what sounded like something inside my bb was cracked or loose. then last night i had a dream that the whole thing fell apart......weird.

Then some American guy came over and started doing some strange miming toward his beer. It transpired that he thought we were German and wanted us to look after his beer while he went to the WC. "Me go wee-wee" he was saying "you-watchy beer-OK". We let him go on like that for a few minutes while saying nothing then I put him out of his misery and just said "so you want us to look after your beer then mate- ha ha". |

n/m On a related note, is it worth spending $250 - $310 on Sugino/Campy track cranks when bulletproofs go for less than $50? Is there a viable middle ground? |
I use road, mountain, and bmx cranks and don't have this problem when they're properly tightened with the proper tools. Without the proper tool, yes, this is a problem no matter what.
Sometimes I feel like I must be the only person with no locktite involved in the assembly of his bike. |
