I bought a "Mercier" from eBay..

I've been off the boards for a while so I don't know if there has been much discussion of these track bikes. Feels like the bike equivalent of buying a Tommy Hilfiger shirt from that guy on the freeway exit ramp, but hey the price is right. Obviously the components are nothing special, but I actually like the frame and I figure I can just replace stuff if/when it goes bad. (I wish it came with the Sugino 75 cranks like the KHS but oh well.)

i was thinking about buying the same bike...because as a base for upgrades, it is price effective. i talked to the woman, and she regarded me as an idiot, which turned me off even though i am sure that she deals with a lot of people who dont know much. how satisfied are you with it? and does anyone else on the forums know anything about these bikes??

my expert opinion is that you should definitely buy this bike. then you can start a club of people named jason with merciers.

You left out the Chicago part. (at least, I think)

stuck here in charlotte, NC. the club will have to have regional meetings. i think that i have decided on an IRO after much deliberation. honorary member?

jasonyates 01-22-05 09:21 PM

How do you mean she regarded you as an idiot? I asked a couple questions and I seemed to get rather generic answers, but I am thinking of the seller more as a person trying to liquidate something rather than a bike person.. It comes in on Wednesday so I'll let you guys know how it is then.

CHeck this one out http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW. I'm not coneected to it in anyway but the (physical) store of this ebayer is a block away from our office. The mechanic seems to know his stuff and spoke at length about his long bike history. Cool guys though and very personable. The shop owner was a bit drunk at the time which made him quite funny.

As far as the bikes go I believe that someone had bought the name but I've seen it mentioned, recommended here. A search may be in order to get more details as the MErcier website doesn't really give that much info.

she kind of brushed my questions about the bike off...and then felt the need to explain to me the inner workings of the bike industry in a way that you would to a four year old. but really, i didnt think anything of it either because i was thinking of her in the same way, which kept me from being offended or anything. either way, make sure to let us know about it because i thought the mercier site was vague, too.

i bought the same mercier on ebay about 2 weeks ago and really love it . it is much nicer than i expected and the components ride a lot nicer than you'd expect. aside from the lock ring spinning off on my test ride (i didn't check it) it is great. it is well worth the money and i can't believe i was apprehensive about buying it -- what a deal

polytoxic 01-24-05 08:24 PM

My buddy bought one. The mercier is really just a 2005 KHS flight 100 (the 05 KHS comes with the truvativ crank and not the Sugino 75's). Its a real pretty bike and rides real nice. It comes with some really beautiful deep v style rims which I envy and a threaded crowned fork (nitto stem and deep drops would make this bike gorgeous). The only thing I don't like about the bike is the non track drops, and the brake holes front and rear. The price can not be beat. Now if I can just talk my buddy into letting me switch his fork and rims with my 05 Bianchi Pista parts.........

You mean it doesn't have track fork ends but road type dropouts?

BlastRadius 01-24-05 09:28 PM

Never mind, you mean the drop bars.

jasonyates 01-25-05 06:44 AM

You can't expect a $350 bike to come with a bunch of nice accessories. Honestly the gripe about the bars is only aesthetic anyways. I prefer the crappy stuff as if it doesn't get stolen I'm just going to crash it sooner or later anyways. :)

There are a lot of merciers. Which one and where did you buy it?

Seeing as how he bought it off eBay and was reporting this in the SS/FG forum, I would guess the fixed-gear Mercier for sale on eBay. :D

i think that he bought it from sporty mama...someone who has an ebay store. all of this positive feedback about the bike. i'll never make up my mind.

jasonyates 01-27-05 12:53 AM

Well I just came back from my first ride on the new bike, while it is snowing none-the-less. I am thoroughly satisfied with this bike so far. It feels nice and tight and fast.. (That's about all I was hoping for.) The components are all pretty generic/entry-level, but for the price you can't expect much more. I just hope everything lasts a couple weeks so I can make some cash with the thing before needing to replace stuff. I start delivering sandwiches tomorrow, haha. My first bike job so I'm pretty excited. (I've been very couped up for the last three years at my old job so getting outside in the snow and making $5 a run or whatever actually sounds pretty good.)

Jason - what happened to your Pista? Did you sell that too when you were moving and such? When you get a chance, photos? I'm curious as to how it looks (not just from the ebay photos).

RandyMcD 01-28-05 04:20 AM

I stumbled onto those on eBay, too. Are the decals on the outside of the clearcoat, by chance?

shmudaddy 01-31-05 06:19 PM

I recently bought the Mercier off eBay as well. Very happy with it. Was just in a bikeshop selling the KHS Flite 100 track and is almost exactly the same....except $200 more. Same frame, same exact hubs and wheels, same stem/bars. KHS had a Sugino crank and my Mercier has Trutativ.

Yeah I sold the Pista a while ago and I just picked this up because it was easy basicly. You can see a photo in my other (controversial) post. :) It's decent looking; the logos are a little gaudy but I don't care.

No. I was hoping to be able to remove them but it is difficult.
