Switching out stems?

So i recently got a new fixie from my fam, totally dig it so far, aside from the stem. it's obviously different from my other bike, that has a quill stem and i'd like to switch it out, and realize that not all stems/ and bikes are universally compatible. the frame is called a phixie, here's a pic. think it'd be possible to switch out this stem with an oldschool quill stem?

It has a 1 1/8" steerer tube and as long as the ID is constant and proper (sorry don't know the proper ID off the top of my head) you can use a 1-1/8" quill. There are 1 1/8" quill MTB stems but I dunno if that's what you're after exactly. Some of them are impossible to get drop bars into, but some will accept them.

but his fork isnt threaded......

Oh, yeah, gonna need new fork, headset , etc.

or get some kinda ring clamp to take the place of the threadless stem, then stuff a quill in there.

I wouldn't go to all that trouble on a Phixie, I don't think.

You could definitely take off your current technology and swap it for a standard that's been outdated for quite some time that is harder to work with and has less options for upgrades, but why would you? By the time you pay for a new fork, headset, stem, and (likely bartape if it's a single bolt clamp), you are probably coming close to the cost of the bike. Is it just an aesthetic thing, or do you genuinely believe that quill stems are better? I say leave it alone, or get a stem that will work with your current setup but is the proper angle/length for your needs.

hm yeah that seems like way more trouble than i'd want to go through right now, especially considering that i already swapped out the flat bars for my drops. i sensed a slight tinge of condescension there-"for a phixie, i don't think" i'm not a valid judge of bikes yet i feel like, but how do you guys feel about the equality of it while we're at it? haha yeah, it's mostly aesthetic, i love vintage looking bikes, and prefer that it look older and less new ish, and for some reason i thought it'd be easy to swap the parts i already had. whoops

It is a lot of trouble for any bike with nothing to really gain. You can always find an older bike for the real deal :thumb:

I'd only swap out all those parts if it was a nice old lugged frame that someone else went threadless with.

I dunno if there were ever any good looking 1-1/8 quill stems, just MTB stuff so ...

^ I have that VO tallstack on my craptastic. It does the job and matches the VO seatpost I have.
