I'm failing to see the logic. Losing control at any speed is gonna ****ing suck.

Not a hard thing to understand. The odds of losing control at low speeds are less likely to happen. So imo front brake was enough for the type of riding I was doing SS.

http://sheldonbrown.com/brakturn.html explains this very well, too.

To the OP, just a front brake is perfectly fine to stop your single speed bicycle promptly and efficiently, provided it does not fail. The risk is up to you.

Your reading comprehension needs work... Going without any form of rear brake on a bicycle is a really bad idea.

Can't read, don't want to.

I think it's funny when people try to build a logical argument around "meh, **** it." You had a SS with one brake, it felt sufficient and you said, "meh, **** it, I don't need another brake." But instead of just being one with that you gotta ramble on about how if you had a geared bike you'd really Go For the Gold and need two brakes and SS's are just for derpin' about on flat ground. Weird.

I find it funny that so many people get up in arms about single brake set-ups on freewheels while simultaneously riding brakeless fixed gears. Considering all this talk about braking effectiveness, wouldn't a single speed with a front caliper brake really be safer than a brakeless FG (a bike that effectively has one inefficient rear brake) and only nominally less safe than a FG with a front brake? If the rider doesn't know how to slow down effectively, the "braking" benefits of a fixed gear are basically null.

I didn't ramble on, he asked me a question so I answered. Had he not asked, I would've left it at meh, **** it.

If you're talking about me, I rode a double brakes on my fixed, and took the brakes off when I retired it to the track.

Not talking about anyone in particular. My daily ride is a brakeless fixed gear and I've never had brakes on any of my fixed bikes.

Not even once??? You're missing out.

I did, when I tried FG years ago. But not since I built the new FG, on Friday. And I don't think I'm going to, very soon, either. I want to take my time to feel out the pedaling and back-pressure.

An ss with a single front could stop faster than a brakeless fg but the lack of ability to modulate the speed of the rear wheel can make riding in some conditions very hazardous while the fg does offer that rear wheel braking and modulation. Without a front brake a fg does not stop worth sh** and in the old days, many fixed gear bikes had two brakes.
