Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I can't tell you how many people ask me why my bike doesn't have any brakes.
She's your mother, please don't address her as "people"

With words.

FG is nothing compared to explaining vegetarianism or veganism. My mom still doesn't grasp it.

Mom: Eat some meat.
My bro: Mom, he's vegetarian.
Mom: Eat some chicken.
Me and my bro: shake heads

I remember hearing that quote the day he said it. It was amazing that he said that with a straight face.

I feel as though fixed gear bikes are a well known quantity at this point, so subsequently I've never really had anyone ask me about the mechanics of it. Though I have had to correct people about fixed gears in a roundabout way. Also, I ride freewheel so whenever someone refers to my bike as a "fixie" (that term makes me cringe), I'm always tempted to correct them but I never bother.

The questions/comments I get the most:

1. "Only one brake?"
2. "Is that bike hard to ride?"
3. "I hear fixies are really dangerous. People are constantly getting killed because you can't stop them."
4. "Nice bike! *person takes picture of my bike*"
5. "What kind of lights are those?"

So, yeah. I've never been directly asked what fixed gear is.
