Are We Geeks?

Hide behind all the punk rock you want but doesn't associating on a speciality BB on the internet iherently classify us as Geeks (capital intended)?

What's next listening to Rush and playing Dungeons and Dragons?

"There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunligh
And the oaks ignore their pleas"

arcellus 01-27-05 02:24 PM

Geeks, yes. Rush, GOD NO! :eek:

junioroverlord 01-27-05 02:30 PM

Bike Geeks....though I wouldnt mind a game of D&D right about now.

dolface 01-27-05 02:31 PM

HELL yes we're geeks! some of us are multiple types of geek as well.

timmhaan 01-27-05 02:35 PM

dictionary.com says:
~~~~~
geek
n. Slang
1. a. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
b. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
2. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.
~~~~~

i don't know about you guys, but my carnival show often contains bizarre acts, so yes, i guess i'm a geek.

Hate rush, love d&d...and yes I am a geek (even an IT manager), but I am also 6'5 and a big guy, played basketball, football and rugby. No one called me a geek unless I said it first :)

iamjberube 01-27-05 02:40 PM

accept it and move on. you sleep better once you admit who you are. anyway, fixies are better than playing magic, right? right?

Maelstrom 01-27-05 02:41 PM

I don't ride a fixie...but I would definately ride one before EVER playing magic.

hammye 01-27-05 02:41 PM

D&D? I have a game of that on Sunday. I think anytime one is passionate about something you tend to geek out about it. Comics, toys, bikes, whatever floats your boat.

somethings are (unfairly?) exempt from geek status even though people are equally obsessive about them. for example, if i really was into football, or NBA basketball, or big honking trucks, i think it would be a hard stretch to get someone to call you a geek. throw computer games, D&D, Rush, bikes, or whatever into the equation and somehow you become geek worthy. it's stupid. but, i consider the label a badge of honor, because it shows willingness to do what you love even if it's outside the mainstream.

justin79 01-27-05 02:51 PM

I for one have never bitten the head off a live chicken...

at a carnival.

dustinlikewhat 01-27-05 02:57 PM

I'm an Audio Video tech who stays late to read product manuals... I've played all the geek games, except vampire the masquarade (sp?), that just went to far for my tastes....

But I also listen to alot of metal, so what ever...

hammye 01-27-05 02:58 PM

what about fantasy football or any of the other ones?

Nice! hehe

jasonsan 01-27-05 03:13 PM

I recently realized that we are ALL geeks. Every lovin' last one of us on this rock.

good point. and i think just the simple fact that a person is into ANYTHING AT ALL makes them pretty cool. i mean, how many people are only interested in the things that are spoon fed to them on TV? just going outside the norm in any way to pursue things that you've found to keep you sane and happy make you a Geek and a Cool Dude(ette) at that same time.

and yes, i did say Dudette.

Fugazi Dave 01-27-05 03:39 PM

I post on Bikeforums too many times in a day. I used to be a mod on an anime forum. I own multiple artbooks by my favorite manga artists. I study sociology, Zen Buddhism, and computer crap in my spare time. I have performed case mods. I did an internship at Case Western Reserve University. It'll be three years before I start grad school, but I'm already working on research on visual theory for my thesis. I can't take in any kind of media without analyzing it. I own multiple tshirts from thinkgeek.

Let's see... Nope, not a geek at all...

Edit: Forgot to mention 15-hour stints of playing Doom on nightmare mode while listening to Bach... :D

no kidding!! did you know that this is your 2001st post? congratulations on breaking the 2000 barrier.

Fugazi Dave 01-27-05 03:47 PM

Heh. I've topped 10,000 on other forums...

Ya Tu Sabes 01-27-05 04:01 PM

Forget you guys! I'm no geek. I'm totally cool.

bostontrevor 01-27-05 04:05 PM

Damn. I could use a burrito. Curse you, adbot.

roadfix 01-27-05 04:09 PM

I'm cool too.....no, I'm too cool.

skitbraviking 01-27-05 04:16 PM

I thought the question was so obvious that it probably didn't need to be asked.

Ken Cox 01-27-05 04:24 PM

I assume Rush refers to a band and not to Limbaugh.

Fugazi Dave wrote:

I play on the forums 12 hours a day, and even moderate two, and I haven't hit 10,000 on any of them.
Maybe I should narrow my focus.

A friend says when one wakes up in the morning and finds himself surrounded by nothing but his toys and his technology, and likes it, that makes him a geek.
