What to do with that extra lever?
 

So I have a Schwinn SS/FG conversion with both front and rear brakes and I've decided to get rid of the rear brake. But I'm also planning on keeping the rear brake lever, since if I remove it I lose a hand position and the bike won't be symmetrical. Anyone whose done this have advice on immobilizing the lever itself, or something like a clamp-on hood-stub-thing to replace it?

Install a bell and run the cable to the bell lever.

Most levers you can run a screw through the cable tunnel-way to the rear of the brake clamp, thread a nut onto the end of the screw and lock the lever in place.

Others have spring actuation so they stay in place by themselves. My brakes are like this, they still rattled a bit over bumps so I shoved a chunk of eraser into the mechanism and now they stay quite and in place.

Also, this:

Attach and extra brake to it. You never know when your chain will break.

You should be able to pull the lever out too if that bothers you.

I always get flamed for saying this, but you can saw the unused lever off, leaving the hood and a cm or two of lever to wrap your finger around. I did this to a pair of tektro levers...keeps the lever from rattling around.

If the asymmetry bothers you....don't look down at your drive train.

You can use a zip-tie to hold it, or the bolt+nut method mentioned above. No reason to destroy something that's still perfectly useful with something you can't undo.

Cane creek lever and cane creek dummy hood. Think they only come in black, but that's your best bet.

If it came down to that, I would rather just have the rear brake.

Why not just keep the rear brake? You're not going to gain anything by removing it.

+1 for keeping rear brake. Are you that concerned about weight?

+2 for rear brake.

Both brakes and levers are way more aesthetically pleasing than 1 brake/2 levers, or that problem solvers thing.
But if you can pull off the lever-actuated bell, that would be teh awesumzz.

Amen. Theres really no point in removing it if its there.
