New Bike | Noisy drivetrain/chain - Pics & Vid
 

Hello,

Just picked up a Giant '72 and I noticed some noise coming from the drivetrain/chain.

Initially I noticed the front wheel had a squeak when I stand up and pedal hard, soon realized the tire pressure was low and that went away immediately.

My first real ride was a ~12 mile trip to work and a few miles in I noticed a pretty annoying sound coming from the chain.
*To me it sounds like the chain of an old kids bike that has a rusty and/or dry chain.

So i assumed the chain was dry but it seems fine to me (not dripping wet but not dry).

Im not all to familiar with bikes and am wondering if the chain is too tight maybe?

Is it a brand new bike? Sometimes they just are noisy for a little while. Gotta break in.

Glad to hear as I was afraid of prematurely wearing something out.

Your chain tension is pretty tight. Put a smidge more slack in it and keep your chain lubed (but not over-lubed).

Thanks, picked up some Rock Lube earlier, ill give that a shot and see if it quiets down.

First thing I thought after seeing the first picture was that yer chain is too tight.

There's a visible curve of the chain in the first picture, and in the second, he's pressing the chain from the top and bottom at the same time so it looks tighter.

I'm pretty sure the chain tension is fine, but it's not like you can hurt it with a little more slack.

I hate videos, take too long.

Chain's too tight though. Has that classic "loosen me up dog" click click click.

Spent some time giving it some slack and making sure the chain is properly lubed, it sounds the same.
Note: same sound with little to no slack as it does with a ton of slack. Sounds like its coming from the cog. No sound on the crank.

I even went as far as taking the wheel off and starting over, same sound.

It does have a flop hub with a freewheel on the other side, are those typically noisy?

I left it with a tad bit more slack than before it seems most noticeable at low RPMs.

*Maybe I'm just being a pansy cause its my first real bike (as an adult), planning on riding ~13 miles tomorrow morning and I'll just go from there.

Yea, starting thinking just that as i was putting it back together.

Never imagined myself as and/or tuning into a pansy but here i am. :crash:
