Fixie fashion
Or rather, forced alterations out of necessity. The leg of my jeans got caught in my fixie chain and was consequentally owned. I'm thinking of cutting off the damaged portion, about 4 inches, and cutting off the otherside to match, so that I'm not a victim of chain munchies again. Anyone else do this, or will I be the only dude showing off my luscious ankles?
|
roll 'em up, dawg.
|
lots of people do that. the double cuff also works well.
|
What happens when your jeans get caught up? Did it go right through and around to the other side and pop out or does it twist up dragging you in closer and closer till spikes of death?
|
in my experience.. the jeans just lose.. bad enough that there is no "spikes of death" or "the other side".. just ruined pants before you can even figure out what happaned
|
i pretty much wear ONLY 3/4 length (or whatever length that is) pants, they're good for riding, good for climbing, comfy, and let me show off my pink-striped socks :)
|
I had a pair of pants get caught in my drivetrain. Actually that whole experience seems to be a recurring theme for me. But anyhow...
For me it took a real conscious effort to keep my foot planted on the pedal and hold my line until my bike had finished having its way with me. |
3/4 pants are the win. I wear them on the bike and off.
|
3/4 pants. Knickers. Culottes. Puddle hoppers.
Also known as "SHANTS" (As in "short-pants") |
i HATE calling 'em that, i dunno why but it just bugs me.
|
As someone said above, just roll them up. If it's cold, you can roll them down when you're not on your bike.
Show off those hot ankles/calves! |
i like to call them "manpris".
|
These days I roll them up over my calves, using my big beefy muscles to hold the cuff in place and give me lots of leg movin freedom.
'sides, I like to keep it gangsta! What?! |
sometimes, when i spot a couple bikes chained up outside a bar or venue or somewhere, i visually scope out everyone in the place for "manpris".
2nd degree fixie-spotting - it's a sickness. |
Happened to me - lost a pair of dress pants that way while riding up a hill - I somehow hit my knee pretty good with the handlebars, and managed to keep riding without coming unclipped - something I still haven't worked out the logistics on. Cut them off just above the tear, and have another 3/4 length pair of pants in my wardrobe.

2nd degree fixie-spotting - it's a sickness. Has anyone else noticed that there are people out there rolling up the cuffs simply for the look? There's a bunch of people out here that I KNOW don't ride that I've seen with the double cuff. What gives? |
I know the feeling. I've got several pairs of pants that have legs that are conspicuously cut off or sewn back together from when they've been sucked into the drivetrain. You're riding a long, feel a little tug on your leg, hear a horrific tearing noise, and think about how you should've stopped to roll them up better but were in a hurry. I once had a stray shoelace wrap itself around the pedal spindle as I was spinning down a hill at a good clip; by the time I came to a stop, Mr. Chuck Taylor had half his eyelets torn out and I felt lucky that my ankle was still okay.
Your drivetrain gets hungry sometimes, so roll 'em up or cut 'em off. It makes for a good way to identify other bike people, too. |
I've noticed that. It's "in" right now among students college/high school to have rolled pants, not even to the calf as though for cycling, I see em with pants that were obviously just purchased way to long at the thrift store and rolled up just enough to barely scrape the ground. Not loose and baggy gangsta pants, just plain levis fitted cept a foot too long. I don't get it myself but I never get anything to nonsensical (fashion w/out any any function)

ahh.. capri for men.. took me a while
|
Cuffing's the only way to roll.
|
i too have been rockin the cuff for so many years that people stopped making fun of me about 15 ago..hey im short, don't know how to hem and always on a bike
|
Actually I also like to ride with the italian wool manpris someone posted a while back.
I bought 2 pair, but the rear busted on one the first time I bent over. For reference, I'm 5'9" 120 lbs so I'm guessing it's just the aged thread... [edit: changed wording due to too many posts in a row about rockin' this or that] |
I never did get the "manpris" thing. Just not practical when it's 6 degrees outside and you have to ride 10 miles. I loved Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys but never thought that fashion would catch onto the fixie crowd. I just do the gangst roll on the drive side leg.

wow, a whole topic on pants.
in the uk we call them shanks for some reason, or three quarter length troussers. when i did messenger work i wore them all the time, or just rolled up pants. on the note of fashion, messengers here go for the 'shades on the top of the head' look, even though its raining most of the time (dam you england). i found a pair of adidas cycling glasses in a skip (dumpster to you) and now i wear them sometimes, i mean, how punk rock am i! :D |
