When to trash a tire

I did search before i posted this....did not find the specific answer to this question.

I have been intentionally learning to skid as i figure it's a skill to have and let's face it, kind of fun. I have a brake, i use my brake or pace pedalling/skipping to stop most of the time (before this turns into a "skidding not equal stopping" thing).

i can JUST see the cloth/cord of my back tire (covered in rubber still, but the weave is evident) revealed in about a 1cm square area on my tire as of this evening. I have a new tire in my desk at work (fat lot of good it's doing me there) and i'm wondering if this is a "stop, do not pass go, go get the new tire and throw it on before i ride tonight" situation. I have 44x16, which is 4 skid patches in case that figures into the roulette calculations.

How far do you let your tires wear before calling it a wrap? Guy i work with has a much worse scar in his tire and he's knocking down 30 mile rides on it (albeit no skidding) so i figure i'm fairly safe.

It will work but it will be prone to punctures with the threads showing. I would change it and just stop skidding because it is a useless skill. Tires are important for your health and they cost money too.
