A cog is a cog, at least as far as street use goes. Just go with a cog in the $20-30 range (Dura Ace, Eighth Inch, All City, Origin8, Scrod, etc...) and a Dura Ace lockring or comparable steel lockring.

1. They are great; $10 is a decent deal for one as long as it isn't too worn down or has missing teeth.
2. Google.

I have a set laced to Mavic Reflex tubular rims 32X. I run Veloflex Criterium tires and use a 17 tooth DA cog and lockring. No problems on the street. And the black centers look nice on my black Waterford track bike.

I've been riding a set of 7600's laced to H+son formation face rims for 2 years i think. I've only had to true them twice and the first time was because the bike was stolen 2 months after it was built and although I recovered it whoever rode it was an idiot and messed it up a tad bit.

Anyways, I repack my bearings a few times a year, 3-4, I've replaced the balls once, and it's been great. No issues

Why spend the money on really nice hubs then lace them to boat anchors? The only way I would use DA hubs is laced to nice, light rims. I don't get why people want to spend so much money on weight weenie hubs and heavy rims?

Dura Ace hubs are far from weight weenie. I got em cause they're nice, I prefer loose ball, and they look sexy I have no shame admitting that. H+son rims are also nice, very straight rims when they arrived in the mail, and also look sexy. When I get some cash saved up I'm going to replace the spokes with some bladed ones, because they look sexy.

You can ride a $300 bike just fine, and if riding on the street probably won't notice a rim or hub or crank or stem upgrade, but that doesn't mean it stupid to buy them. I choose not to live life by the bare essentials. I enjoy a little luxury in some things. For some luxury means lighter rims, for me it's rims that have a tall surface and can be air brushed with a sweet design.

I totally agree stryper..whats up with bladed spokes? ive seen some wheels with bladed spokes but dont understand why?? are the stronger? or more aerodynamic?

They're designed to be aerodynamic. By mechanics, though, they are laterally more flexible, which is something that none of us really have to worry too much about.

I can also vouch for H+son rims. I built up a Formation Face and a Formula hub with triple butted spokes (cheapest I could find) as a rear, and have gone on some CX trails and regular commuting with it staying true for 4 months now. My first build too.

That's exactly what the whole DA line is, stuff thats(in general) lighter at the expense of durability than the other race groups.
If you want tark stuff that looks good, thats cool, but it's kind of crazy how the whole SS/FG forum is full of threads of people wanting to lace heavy, not very functional 32-36h rims to high end hubs with super expensive aero spokes, where most roadies are trying to either make light, bomb proof trainig wheels or deep section aero rims..

See, that's a wheel built that makes sense.
