Bike shops in Austin?
 

What are some good bike shops for fixed/old stuff here in Austin? Freewheelin cycles on 24th had some cool stuff, but i havn't really found anywhere else. Any suggestions?

They would have been my recommendation too.

not really too many options in austin. most of the shops cater to fanboys or hybrids. yellow bike on e. 51st has plenty of old parts, and i've heard austin tricyclist on barton springs has some used parts if you ask them nicely.

Yeah, I like Freewheeling the most.

There's not much of an old market in Austin - it kinda sucks.

Austin Tri-cyclist has some used bikes - gotta ask about them, they keep them upstairs.

Waterloo Cycles has used bikes - but it's WAY overpriced, and not much selection.

Ozone has some cool dudes working there, but not much in the way of fixed stuff.

The biggest selection of really old and odd stuff would be the Yellow Bike Project.

Yeah, i just stopped in Yellow Bike the other day and it seems pretty cool, if you have the time and interest to search though endless bins of crap to find that one gem. Which i do, and i need to go back out there soon. Freewheelin has a bunch of sick old road frames. Thanks for the help.

East Side Pedal Pushers on E. 5th...although I believe they are in the process of moving somewhere on E.6th.
Other then that what everyone else has mentioned..Ozone, Waterloo, Yellow Bike.

No, that one is TINY. Go to the one on East 51st.

It's a giant warehouse full of nothing but bikes and bike stuff.

Bicycle Sport Shop is populated with many, many fixed gear riders. They have alley cats all the time, and can help you out with anything. As far as having vintage stuff around, go fish, I'm afraid. Due to it's size, it is often dismissed or stereotyped, but the staff is all about the ride.

another vote for Freewheeling for small / last min parts/lube/etc.

i'd go to the East Side Pedal Pushers for labour (if you need it) - Lee's a great guy - have you ever been offered a cold one at your LBS?

for quality vintage you usually have to go outside Austin, although I do like the $2800 IF Ti frame (just the frame!) at Freewheeling



hardly any bike shops have anything used:

Yellow bike as mentioned earlier - although good luck finding any top of the line light vintage goodies

Lee's shop - East Side Pedal Pushers, now somewhere on E. 6th offers a variety of used bikes, mostly on consignment.

Having worked at Freewheeling for a couple of years, I can attest to the unholy volume of old, cool stuff they have laying around. It's amazing. Definitely a great shop.

...as far as frames go you talk to the guys at firehouse custom bicycles on 24th (across from freewheeling). maybe they would be into making a track frame.

I think he only does cruisers - at least that's all i've seen of his.
